Where I live... West Malling Parish Council

THESE notes are based on the West Malling Parish Council meeting held on July 7 and some of the events that have happened in August. West Malling Parish Council, like many others, follows the long established tradition of not scheduling a full council meeting in August unless an emergency occurs.

J Beck Utilities is working on behalf of Southern Gas Networks, replacing the gas main in the High Street. Work started on July 27 and is scheduled to last up to 15 weeks and will be finished at the beginning of November.

The work on the northern end of the High Street, alongside the village green, has been successfully completed with minimal disruption. The work has been managed very well and the road and pavement kept clean and tidy. Work has continued at a steady pace, despite several episodes of torrential rain, thunderstorms and the re-appearance of a void in the road outside a local restaurant.

As well as replacing the gas main in the High Street, it may be necessary to test and/or replace pipe work to businesses and houses. When this happens, the contractors will arrange a time to come back and complete the work and unless the replacement work is due to an emergency, should give you at least five days notice.

Please ask to see an identity card if a contractor visits your property – they won’t be offended and, indeed they expect to be asked to show it.

Councillors are liaising with the site manager on a daily basis and will be happy to help sort out any issues but Southern Gas Networks does encourage residents to talk to the contractors, particularly if the work is causing distress to less able residents.

Malling Lions has funded and installed a life-saving defibrillator in the red phone box in the High Street. The listed red K kiosk, one of many operational since the 1930s has been decommissioned and the phone removed. Calls to the ambulance service will have to be made from a mobile. The caller will be directed to the kiosk and given a code to open the defibrillator unit. Using the device is very easy; it has instructions and pictographs printed on it and will even play the correct heartbeat rhythm to use for CPR.

Finally, parish councillors would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Cllr Trudy Dean for receiving an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in June. The award is in recognition of Mrs Dean’s hard work, dedication and commitment to serving the community in West Malling

Please note that parish councillors can be contacted via the parish clerk’s office on 01732 870872 during office hours. However, you may not be able to speak directly to the parish clerk for the time being but please be assured that if you leave a message with your name and a contact number, a member of the council will respond as quickly as possible. Or you may prefer to come along to the next monthly meeting on Monday, October 6 at 7.30pm in the Village Hall, Norman Road, West Malling.
