Clean-up aer travellers’ stay
LEYBOURNE residents and parish council have embarked on a clean-up operation after several gypsy families invaded the vil- lage. The Irish travellers are thought
to have removed posts and fencing to get on to sites in Lillieburn and Castle Way, land owned by both Tonbridge and Malling Council and KCC. The borough council got the 17
caravans off the two sites six days later, after it obtained a court order. The parish council was inun-

The parish council thanked the Gallagher Group for pledging to provide ragstone boulders to pro- tect the borough council’s land in Leybourne from future invasion. The parish council agreed to pay the company’s transport costs.

Council wins safety award
TONBRIDGE and Malling Council has received an accolade for the fifth year running for its approach to health and safety at work. The gold award was presented by the Royal Society for the Prevention
of Accidents (RoSPA) at a ceremony in London. Cllr Martin Coffin, who is
pictured handing the award to the mayor Cllr Sasha Luck, said: “The RoSPA awards are not just about reducing the number of ac- cidents and cases of ill health at work. They are about making sure that or- ganisations have good health and safety management systems in place and we are absolutely committed to maintaining the highest levels of performance in this cru- cial area.”
Building plan for vineyard
A NEW building to house equip- ment and machinery has been planned by the owners of a vine- yard beside Rochester Road,Ayles- ford.
Chapel Down PLC, based at Ten- terden, has applied to Tonbridge and Malling Council for permis- sion for an entranc e and crossover, 15m by 20m agricultural building
and storage compound, fencing and security lights. Hard-standing would also be needed to allow the access, exit and turning of large ar- ticulated lorries bringing equip- ment and taking away full pallets at harvest time. The applicant said the building
would be capable of supporting solar panels on the roof.
