Life-saving role for phone box

ADISUSEDred phone box inWest Malling High Street has been brought up to date as the home of the latest in life-saving kit. Helped by shoppers and busi- nesses, Malling Lions have raised enough money to buy a defibrillator and put it in the refurbished kiosk. Staff at nearby businesses are

being shown how to operate the voice-activated equipment but no specialist training is necessary as it will give instructions to the rescuer. Mayor of Tonbridge and Malling

Cllr Sasha Luck performed the offi- cial opening, accompanied by Mike Howes and Bryan Lloyd Williams, of the Lions. The machine, which cost about £2,000, was obtained through the Community Heartbeat Trust. It can deliver a life-saving electric shock in the first crucial minutes after a car- diac arrest, but will not administer one if it detects it is not required. Inside the phone box, the defibril-

lator is in a lockable steel box. When someone calls 999, they will be told where the machine is and given the code for the box. Once the electrode

pads are attached to a casualty, the defibrillator will identify whether the current is needed and will in- struct the rescuer. The Lions have given the phone

box a coat of paint, supplied by man- ufacturers James Briggs, and BT has agreed to pay the cost of the elec- tricity supply to the kiosk. The defibrillator will be checked

weekly and its status reported to the ambulance service by email. A Lions spokesman said: “This project will not only provide West Malling with a lifesaving function but will help continue the legacy of the ‘listed’ red K kiosk which has been operational from the 1930s.”

RESIDENTS will press their case whencouncillors meet to discuss the expansion of Kings Hill. Members of Tonbridge and Malling’s planning committee will meet on Thursday, September 25 to consider amended proposals for phase 3 of the development. Although Liberty Property Trust

UK cut its planned 975 homes by a third to 635, there was concern that the figurewas still too high. Other is- sues raised were transport, traffic and parking. Residents and parish councillors are also disappointed that housing for the elderly has been dropped from the latest plan. Kings Hill Residents’ Group said that with 20% of the area’s popula-
