FSC certification for International Paper APPM

I

nternational Paper APPM in India has been certified by the Forest Steward Council for its

forest management, enabling its customers to be assured that its FSC-labeled products are produced using fibre from certified forests which promote environmental, economic, and social standards for responsible forest management. About a third of its pulpwood

from certified plantations and the remainder is sourced in compliance with FSC controlled wood requirements. As part of the certification, Scientific Certification Systems assessed social, economic and environmental impacts against the 10 FSC Principles and Criteria that were implemented and followed at IP-APPM’s farm forestry designated areas. After a comprehensive evaluation of

IP-APPM’s Casuarina Equisatifolia plantations, covering 28,636 hectares and managed by more than 5,000 farmers, the company was awarded the FSC - FM certificate. This certificate is valid for five years and will be revalidated annually by third-party auditors. Rampraveen Swaminathan,

chief executive of IP-APPM said, “International Paper is the world’s largest procurer of fibre and

our commitment to responsible forestry is a long-held value. This FSC certification is simply the next step in our comprehensive approach to increase the amount of certified fibre used in our products.” International Paper APPM

marked its 50th anniversary in July. Founded as The Andhra Pradesh Paper Mills Limited in 1964, the company was acquired by International Paper in 2011.

Cascades to sell its fine papers business

Quebec-based Cascades Inc, which recovers and manufactures ‘green’ packaging and tissue paper products, is to sell its fine papers division to Rolland Enterprises, a subsidiary of HIG Capital for $39.5 million. Three units are involved in the

transaction: • Rolland Division, an uncoated fine papers and security papers plant located in

Saint-Jérôme and acquired by Cascades in 1992.

• CTC Converting Centre, a fine papers processing and distribution plant built in 1998, also located in Saint-Jérôme.

• Fibres Breakey, a de- inked bleached kraft pulp manufacturing plant located in Sainte-Hélène-de-Breakeyville. The three units have about 425 employees and will now operate under a new company

name – Rolland Enterprises Inc. The current management team will remain in place in order to ensure an orderly transition, says the company. “Despite the positive

contribution of these units to Cascades’ results, we have adopted a strategic orientation emphasizing growth in the packaging, tissue papers and recovery sectors. The decision will allow us to reduce debt and

further focus our resources in these strategic sectors,” said Cascades’ chief executive Mario Plourde.

With annual sales of about C$3.9bn (US$3.7bn), 100 production sites and 12,000 employees in North America and Europe, Cascades produces, converts and markets packaging and tissue products that are composed mainly of recycled fibres.
