Södra to increase its pulp production at Mörrum
S
oftwood and textile pulp production at Södra Cell’s Mörrum mill in Sweden is being increased with
the construction of a new wood- chip plant and the upgrading of one of its two pulp lines. The SEK700 million (US$104m)
investment follows a decision earlier this year by the Södra board to spend more than SEK4 billion ($596m) to increase capacity at the Värö pulp mill. The Mörrum pulp mill operates
two pulp lines in parallel for the production of softwood pulp and
textile pulp (dissolving pulp) with total capacity of 380,000 tonnes per year, which will be increased to 425,000 tonnes. “This is another investment that
strengthens our market position and competitiveness for market pulp. The expansion of pulp production is a key part of our Group strategy and a crucial feature of our efforts to develop our operation,” said Lars Idermark, chief executive of Södra. Valmet will be supplying a new
wood-chip plant with two separate debarking lines, one for softwood- chip and one for hardwood-chip
Tissue and packaging offset graphic paper volume decline
The pulp and paper industry’s performance in Europe has been published by The Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI) in its 2013 Key Statistics. CEPI members produced 91.1 million tonnes of paper and board in 2013, a decrease of 1.2 per cent (1.1 million tonnes) compared to 2012. It was the third consecutive year paper and board production had declined, since the rebound in 2010. Total pulp production fell by 2.2 per cent but market pulp output increased by 1.3 per cent. CEPI countries maintained a positive trade balance for paper and board (exports exceeding imports) of 14.8 million tonnes. The contraction in paper and board production seen in 2013

results from the structural decline in graphic paper consumption in combination with the on-going growth of paper and board packaging and household and sanitary paper. The good performance of the latter two sectors only partly offsets the erosion the graphic paper sector is currently experiencing. The graphic paper sector share of all paper and board produced in Europe dropped to 41.9 per cent in 2013. In contrast, the share of the packaging grades and sanitary and household papers is continuously growing and in 2013 represented 45.9 per cent and 7.7 per cent respectively of all paper and board produced in Europe.
production, in addition to a refit of the softwood line, where the existing washing equipment will be replaced. The order also includes conveyors and conveyor belts for connection to existing chip stacks and bark stores. GL&V will be supplying the
screening and washing equipment in the unbleached area of the softwood pulp line. “We have had a good and close
co-operation with GL&V while planning this project and we are convinced it will continue in the execution phase,” said Jörgen
Lars Idermark
Lindström, operations engineer at Södra Cell Mörrum. The first phase of the project is scheduled to be carried out in 2014-15 with completion expected in March 2016. Mörrum currently produces high- quality pulp and is the only Södra mill to produce textile pulp, for which demand is growing rapidly. Södra Cell has three pulp mills in Sweden: Mörrum, Mönsterås and Värö.
MoveRoll supports Mexico housebuilding project
Finnish paper handling equipment manufacturer MoveRoll is extending its social responsibilities by backing a project that supports teenagers who are constructing simple homes for families in Mexico. MoveRoll’s chief executive Mikko
Rantanen heard about the project at PulPaper in Helsinki from Vince Maynard, publisher of Pulp Paper and Logistics magazine, whose son Joshua has already been to Mexico and is raising money for the second trip in 2015. To cover the cost of the trip and building work each member of Joshua’s group needs to raise £1,300. Once the group’s target of £11,700 is met, the trip in April 2015 can happen. The project is part of the ReBuild
Mexico 2015 which is designed to provide practical help needy Mexican families while creating cross-cultural understanding for the participants. ReBuild is organized
by Urban Saints UK and Amor Ministries in San Diego, California. “When we heard the story of Joshua and ReBuild, we decided right there and then, that MoveRoll will be one of Joshua’s sponsors,” said Rantanen. “MoveRoll operates in a global environment, and we are aware of our social responsibility, both domestically and internationally. As a sponsor of PS Kemi Kings, we are giving something back to the local community of Kemi, which has been a big part of MoveRoll’s development and success story. By supporting Joshua, we help him and his group to improve the life of a family in Mexico, just across the border of the USA, which is currently one of our biggest markets.” ‘Readers who would like to find out more about how to help a Mexican family build their first secure home, contact Vince Maynard by email at vincent.
