to communicate as well at night as they do dur- ing the day. Up to 70% of children experience marked improvement or complete success in keeping the bed dry after as little as 1-3 visits even after failing other treatments. The recur- rence rates are low because the child learns to do this without relying on medication or exter- nal devices.
What is Hypnosis?
Using self-hypnosis, individuals use a state of focused attention to control things they didn’t know they could. The trained hypnotherapist coaches the motivated young person to use his or her imagination to achieve a goal, in this case dry beds. To stay dry at night, the child learns to train the brain and bladder to work together as well during the night as they do during the day using imagery that they create with the guidance of the therapist. Hypnosis works best when the child is inter- ested and self-motivated to have dry beds. Once a child starts using a self-hypnosis approach, parental involvement can actually interfere with the child’s ability to achieve success, as the child needs autonomy to fine tune their internal control pathways. If a parent reminds the child to practice, it may actually increase resistance on the part of the child to fully engage in the process.
Hypnosis is a life skill and many children
and adults who learn hypnosis for one problem may apply this skill to other problems such as stress, or sleep problems. When children learn hypnosis, they gain a lifetime appreciation of the power of the mind in relationship to their bodies and their general health.
