MOTORING JAGUAR XF SPORTBRAKE CONTINUED.........
which together added a further £7,000 to the price.
The facia is well-laid out, the driving position excellent and the comfort superb. You do feel you can drive right across Europe and still arrive relaxed. Ride quality is exceptional and
PEUGEOT 308 Peugeot describes its new 308,
launched earlier this year, as ‘audacious and intuitive’ and the driving experience as ‘unprecedented’, which suggesting a lot of confidence in the new model. That confidence is well- founded judging by my recent 600-mile test drive, for this 308 is certainly the best mid-size Peugeot I have ever driven. It’s styling is very classy, and it scores highly for its responsive driving feel, and for outstanding fuel economy. It is set to be a big seller for the French manufacturer. There are several petrol engines on offer but the majority
of buyers will opt for one of the two 1.6 litre diesel units offering 91 hp and 114 hp. My test model was fitted with the latter engine, which has a rather modest 0-60mph time of 11.9 seconds, top speed of 118 mph and offers 74.3 mpg combined. In a week of town driving and a long motorway trip, I
averaged just over 60 mpg with no attempt at economy, so the higher figure should be achievable with a lighter foot. Visually, it is quite striking and a more subtle front-end
makes it more classy too. The cabin is a nice place to be, though Peugeot’s decision to make the steering wheel much

such a big impression in so short a time
the tight body control and sharp responsive steering inspire great driver confidence. I found it an effortless driving experience. The XF sportbrake is an all-round stunner, and with Jaguar’s prestige cachet and top-level reliability record in the J.D Power survey, is a formidable force in its sector.
smaller takes a little getting used to. A touch-screen controls most of the equipment including the air-con. The facia is smartly styled and the seating very comfortable. Rear seat accommodation is tight for taller occupants, but fine otherwise and the boot, at 470 litres, is more roomy than that of a Focus or a golf. All models come with air-conditioning,
Bluetooth, a digital radio and cruise control as standard but the mid-range Active models add alloy wheels, rear parking sensors and sat-nav. Allure models add full-LeD headlights, reversing camera and front parking sensors. My test model was in range-topping Feline spec, priced at £21,745 offering extra kit including larger 18” alloys, a panoramic glass roof with powered screen and keyless entry. The new 308 is pleasing to drive. Though on paper not that quick off the mark, it is very smooth in acceleration and also offers a nice compliant ride, stable cornering and good feedback from the road. With its sleek profile and easy-feel driving manners, the 308 is a stand-out model in the Peugeot stable and should not only please existing customers but attract new buyers to the brand.
