This year has seen wave after wave of virus and malicious software attacks. And it’s just about to get worse. Ordinary people have been badly affected and it should be a top priority for every computer user to tighten up their security. In May, news spread of the CryptoLocker and Gameover Zeus threats. What makes these viruses so dangerous is that they can empty your bank account or freeze your computer. not having adequate security could have very real financial consequences.


What are these Viruses? Gameover Zeus originated in Russia and Ukraine and is highly sophisticated malicious software. It searches for files that will allow access to banking or financial information. The virus can lie dormant so some users may be infected and not even know it. If Gameover Zeus is not successful in stealing your financial data (and funds) the virus distributes another aggressive programme, called cryptolocker. this encrypts all files on a users’


Using a Free Antivirus Program? It May Cost you Money. computer, including documents and pictures and then demands a ransom of about £300 within a specified time limit to unlock the files. the Fbi estimates that up to a million computers have been infected worldwide. How do they Spread This virus is spread through links and attachments in unsolicited emails. Don’t click on any link or attachment in an email. These emails may purport to come from someone that you know. Look for mis-spellings and poor grammar. If in doubt, just delete the email. How to Protect Yourself Don’t store passwords on your system and have your data and pictures backed up. Don’t click on links or open attachments in emails and change your passwords. Most importantly run full system scans with a good internet security package. Whilst the current virus threat is high, run scans daily if you can. Update Windows Make sure Windows is up to date with security updates. You can check by clicking the START Button, click ALL PROGRAMS and then WINDOWS UPDATE. Check for updates and install if available. Still Using Free Antivirus? Antivirus protection alone is not enough anymore. Every computer should have a good Internet Security programme installed.
