SHAKESPEARE WEEK

theatre and this takes our commitment one step further. every year, after the performance, we

will go through the applications we have received, and give a one-off payment of £500 to that young person we believe has contributed to and been enthusiastic about, theatre performance or working in theatre, be that in lighting and sound or stage management or any aspect of theatre. The applicants need to be between the ages of ten and seventeen; to have shown commitment to a group or theatre in school; live in the South Hams area and have a goal that they wish to achieve in the next year. 2013’s recipient, and the first to get the Bursary, was Freya Hoban from stoke Fleming, who is using the award to fund a week in stratford-upon-Avon attending a workshop with the RSC. so if you know a youngster who would benefit from such an award, please get in touch with us and tell us what they have been up to and what they would like to do with the Bursary. The result will be publicised sometime towards the end of october this year. As you can see, we’ve not been idle in the supposed down-time between productions and, as I write (towards the end of May), the process of rehearsing and getting everything ready for DsW 2014 is really picking up speed. ‘The Taming of the shrew’, in some

ways, is as controversial a choice of play as ‘King Lear’ was in 2013 but for very different reasons. once again, the company is pushing itself to present a traditional representation of the piece but with a slightly skewed perspective. But it will be no less fun for that… promise…because the Commedia Dell’arte form was conceived for just that purpose. It was and is, a way of performing that accentuates traits and characteristics, placing the performers into set, or stock, character identities. CDA was conceived in the early sixteenth century and usually relied on carefully rehearsed storylines (usually about love) but had a heavy element of ad lib about it. The performers had a huge repertoire of moves and situations upon which they could draw and were usually so practised that they knew exactly what their colleagues would do, even if it diverted from the supposed

‘script’. The accentuated movements simplified the storytelling and language was never a problem: they merely used their own ‘invented’ language, known as gromalot. The performers were always masked and the masks also had very specific characteristics that reflected the stock characters and helped the audience identify with the piece.

The tradition of these stock characters and their huge influence, can been seen reflected in the comedy of yesteryear, like the Marx Brothers, right up to today, in TV shows like The Fast show and, less recently, Benny Hill.

This year’s production of ‘The Taming of the shrew’ runs from 5th August

to 9th August inclusive at Dartmouth Castle. The show starts promptly at 7.30pm, and tickets can be purchased from the Dartmouth Tourist Information Centre. This year we are offering discounts on groups of eight or more purchased together, although our popular Family Tickets are still available and will not come under this new discount scheme. If you want to get in touch please write to us at theinntheatrecompany@ gmail.com. This address will reach us with regard to anything you may want to know or if you want to be considered for the Bursary. enjoy the show! We’ll be putting our feet up at some point…just not sure when!
