AROUND KINGSWEAR Around Kingswear NEWS FROM THE SUNNY SIDE
KINGSWEAR BONFIRE over the last few years the bonfire has become dangerously
large owing to the amount of material which is left. The Parish Council is naturally unhappy about this and, unless something is done, the event can no longer take place. one suggestion would be to discontinue the dumping of wood etc. by the fence before the day, and only accept contributions from a very few nominated people (local builders for example) to be offered the day before or on the morning of the fire. This assumes that other people cooperate by not putting material by the fence. Does anybody have any other
suggestions?
BEACON RD. – BOTHERED?? Bothered? I should say so. Many people have expressed
dismay that the path/road is still closed nearly eighteen months after the road-slip caused it to be closed. The Parish `Council is likewise most concerned and has been doing everything possible to action this unhappy situation in a positive way. This week (June 3rd
got a little more money to spend. This is good news for both establishments. Long may they both prosper.
WI ACTIVE At the time of writing the WI ladies are actively planning the
) we invited Mr Peter
Brunt, the Neighbourhood Highway Manager from Devon County Council to see how we may proceed, after drawing blanks with more local enquiries. Mr Brunt was very helpful, outlining several possible lines of approach and he is to enquire about funding for a temporary repair, with a view to considering the more long-term life of the path in the not too distant future.
Mr Brunt has kindly offered to return to the Parish Council meeting which takes place on July 3rd
in the Sarah Roope
Room at 7:30pm. I am letting you know so that you have a chance to come along to that meeting to show your support for the opening of the path, or not I suppose. A show of strength in the form of numbers would help to support our request for funding. so if you do care about the Coast Path at Beacon Road please organise to come along on July 3rd
.
HAPPY NEWS Many people have said how pleased they are to see the café/
restaurant open once more in Kingswear and it seems that they are backing this up with their mouths and their wallets. I talked to Debsie and Michelle (pictured above) in early June, after the cafe had only been open four weeks and they told me that business was good so far and good across the board since they are busy at breakfast, morning coffee, lunch, afternoon tea and indeed dinner as well. so, well done all round. When I visited they tried to force me to eat carrot cake, their signature goodie, which is all fine by me. It seems that The ship is also busy with meals so there must be lots of hungry people about and perhaps they’ve
yearly onslaught which is Kingswear Regatta, where they supply us all with lashings of good things like cake, scones and biscuits. (or is that just me – I expect they do other wonderful things too but I haven’t really got beyond the goodies). In the middle of a usually windy and sometimes wet field they also manage to serve us hot tea and coffee. This year is in the planning and doubtless, ovens will be stoking-up all over Devon to build up a supply of the good stuff. All grist to your mill ladies. The trip to A la Ronde will have taken place by the time you
read this. The ladies planned to tour the marvellous, 16-sided, seventeenth century house near Exmouth and to visit Dart’s Farm as a way of exercising their shopping glands. All this on 18th
June. Two future dates for the ladies’ diaries are July 16th when
they will enjoy a talk about the Donkey sanctuary, over near sidmouth, by one of its operators; the other significant date is the Annual garden Party which is to held at the Boltons’ house, which I believe is Hoodown House over on the north side of Waterhead Creek on August 20th
, where, would you believe,
they will consume not just cake but full cream teas. Bubbly will be served. We chaps will have to get organised! We’re missing out!
Would you believe that as I was writing the above an email winged its way from the fleshpots of sheffield where my secret WI mole is sojourned with our family for a few days; here it is: The last WI meeting was called Rolling Back the Years when beautician (and WI member) Lisa Kimble showed us how to moisturise our wrinkles and blemishes away by working a minor miracle on our ageing skins. Great fun - and there was cake! Have you noticed a common theme?
