to be a conduit for apps directly from the phone, such as Pandora, Facebook, and Google. “The cloud platform is in control of all the content and applications that are allowed to be used in the car,” Hong said. “The automakers are constantly keeping a touch-point with the vehicle owner today, which is quite groundbreaking.” Currently, OnStar, which serves a simi-
lar function of keeping drivers connected to the outside world, uses call centers as their customer touch point, Hong added. “The head unit in the car doesn’t provide that touch point with the customers in the car. By having this cloud platform, we’re constantly keeping all the connec- tivity to the car.”
Back in 2006, when no one was talking about the cloud concept, Hong and his team envisioned that, with the prolifer- ation of the smartphone and number of devices and software put into the vehicle, a variety of different devices used for con- nectivity would be inevitable. “All devices have different capabilities, such as Lexus versus Toyota Corolla. How- ever, if you want to have a compatibility with all of them, the only way is to move the intelligence of the cloud,” Hong said.
