On With The Show

By branching out, Greg’s Custom Audio, Video & Car Stereo builds visibility and banks on bringing in new business

WORDS BY JAMIE SORCHER Y

ou never know where your next customer might come from, so Greg Tackett, owner of Greg’s Custom Audio, Video & Car Stereo, decided

to investigate some alternative opportu- nities which have ultimately proven to be worth the time and effort. Located in Pikeville, Ky., Tackett’s busi- ness focuses on car audio and mobile video installations as well as navigation— both portable and in-car—as well as iPod solutions. He also handles home theater projects, multi-room audio systems, and sales of video projectors and TVs. “In February, we went to the Eastern

Kentucky Sport, Boat and RV Show for the first time,” said Tackett. “We were located indoors, and our booth was in a great location, which always helps. We were right near the doors where people entered, which was also where they would leave from, so they got to see us twice.”

Held in Pikeville at the 26,000-square- foot East Kentucky Expo Center, the show is a popular one that typically draws a variety of folks from around the region. “The economy around here, with this being right in the middle of the coal industry, has meant lots of folks are laid off, so this show brings in folks from other counties,” said Tackett. The retailer, which has been in busi- ness since 2007, showed custom car audio and video along with truck and RV acces- sories—and even some home theater. For mobile, the store is an authorized dealer for Alpine, Kenwood, Pioneer, Rockford Fosgate, Memphis Car Audio, MTX, and others. Tackett had a staff of five working the show for its three-day run. “We would definitely do this show

again,” he said. The experience has fueled Tackett’s interest in doing other events as well. He is already planning for a show

later this summer in Prestonsburg, Ky. The annual event, which might be a sur- prising one for a car audio installer to attend, will be held at the Jenny Wiley State Resort Park in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The Eastern Kentucky Elk & Hunting Expo is located in an area known as the Elk Capital of the East, as the region is home to more than 12,000 elk. “We’re also going to do this event,” Tackett said. “Lots of the folks coming to this show have trucks and would have an interest in some of what we are doing. We’re just trying to get people to notice us.” Tackett said he is confident that these unique events are helping to bring in new customers and build awareness of his business in the region. “We’re still getting people in the store who said they saw us a few months ago at the Boat & RV Show and wanted to come in and check us out.” 
