Fun in the sun-without a rain dance

ONE positive about the remorseless stream of rain we endured over the winter is that there will be no hosepipe ban this year.

This was probably the last thing on the minds of flood victims while they were clearing up the waters from their front rooms or waiting anxiously for acceptance of an insurance claim.

But for once we can look ahead to the hope of a warm spring and summer without worrying that the plants will become parched or flowers die early due to water restrictions.

There will be enough to go around, which means that cricket clubs should have fertile greens and the subjects of flower shows can be shown off in tiptop condition.

Spring is a time of the year when the financial burden of Christmas has usually been cleared and we look ahead to breaks away.

If you can afford it, you could try one of our weekend escapes (pages 14-15) which offer something a little unusual. It is a fair bet that few people in Kent wake to the roar of lions and go for morning walks with a puma, but that is what you can experience at Wildlife Heritage Foundation’s base in Smarden.

A less extravagant experience, but perhaps just as enjoyable, is to watch an amateur theatre production (page 24). These events are often community-led but the participants are serious about their craft and know how to put on a good show.

As always, we have plenty of other ideas to help you make the most of life in Mid Kent.
