Take some time out in Tenterden

WITH its tree-lined streets, timber-framed buildings and medieval church, Tenterden is justly proud of its reputation as the “Jewel of the Weald”.

Situated on the A28, this gem of a town is surrounded by charming villages and countryside, making it the perfect place to visit and an ideal base for exploring the best of the Garden of England. Cobbled alleys, quaint inns, coffee shops and weatherboarded cottages – Tenterden has got the lot for a perfect day out. There is also a treasure trove of antique shops, as well as restaurants, tea rooms and quirky shops selling crafts and gifts.

Ham and ships Tenterden owes its success and wealth originally to pig farming in the Wealden forests and later, from the 14th century, to the wool and weaving industries. Nowadays it’s hard to believe it was once a major shipbuilding centre, as the sea is 10 miles away.

Before the river Rother silted up, the

town became nationally important in the 15th and 16th centuries with merchant vessels docking at Smallhythe. Tenterden was so valued by the King that it was incorporated into the Cinque Ports as a limb of Rye and, as such, enjoyed many

privileges. It was granted exemption from national taxation and given the right to be represented at the coronation of the monarch. The latter privilege is still closely guarded, but sadly for Tenterden folk, the tax exemption no longer applies.

Today the bustling town is enjoyed by thousands of visitors but still retains a relaxing atmosphere. Its broad High Street lined with grass verges and pavement café tables adds a European feel to its traditional Kentish heritage.
