Stirling Threads: the exhibition of Stirling & District Embroiderers’ Guild
This exhibition of members’ work is in the Smith Museum and Art Gallery until 5th April.
2014 is a
special year for Stirling and District as it is the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn. To mark this event, the Curator of “The Smith”, where we hold our meetings, asked if we could embroider a banner to hang in the gallery. She could then take it with her when she gives lectures throughout the world. The banner should reflect the history of Stirling during these seven centuries.
Twenty members volunteered to make a contribution to the banner and they were given a template for the size and shape required and left to embroider it as they wished. There were meetings so that members could ensure that their work fitted into the plan; the only constraints were the area to be covered and the subject portrayed. Despite the 20 pieces employing different techniques, the three sections come together as a unit. This has been done without any disagreement and expresses the harmony of the Guild.
It proved to be a very sociable and enjoyable project and the banner was handed over to “The Smith” at the opening of the exhibition in the gallery. It was accepted by the Provost of Stirling, Councillor Mike Robbins who was particularly pleased to see the Stirling Heads featured. By Margaret Beith
