Natural Health... Cough, Cough, Cough
As we move through winter towards spring, many of us are still suff ering from the remnants of colds and infl uenza.
Infections can leave residual catarrh which descends to the chest and then just drags on and on. So let’s look at the top remedies for this problem.
Homeopathic remedies are the fi rst to try. Anconite 30 is indicated where there was a sudden onset of the cough especially when exposed to the cough or after getting drenched. The cough tends to be worse at night; dry or ringing with a feeling of suff ocation. If, though, the cough is accompanied with much sticky phlegm that is diffi cult to move then Ant Tart 30 should be tried. Another symptom for this remedy is a rattling chest.
Two useful remedies for children’s coughs are Belladonna 30 for a dry tickling cough with violent spasms. There will be a temperature and redness of face. Children will typically start to cry before the cough begins. Drosera 30 coughs start with a crawling sensation in the throat and results in severe coughing spasms from deep in the chest, and can end with retching or even vomiting. The suff erer will complain of pain and hold their chest until the cough stops. Drosera coughs are much worse at night.
Finally when the cough follows a heavy catarrhal cold where the phlegm is yellow or green Pulsatilla 30 will hit the spot. The cough

is ‘loose’ in the morning and ‘dry’ at night, worse for being indoors and generally better for fresh air.
Cough medicines to take for relief whilst the remedies get into the system are Potters Vegetable
Cough Remover which does
an excellent job, but it’s not for the faint hearted. A milder option, which is also good and probably better for the children to take, is Allens Pine and Honey Cough Syrup. For convenience get some Cough Rock with coltsfoot. It is mild, soothing and easy to take. Red Sage Tea has antiseptic properties to combat harmful bacteria and is warm and soothing.
For topical relief Aloe Heart is very eff ective at loosening the chest. It is Aloe lotion combined with natural warming agents like eucalyptus and capsicum. Applied to the throat and chest before bed, it is comforting and soothing. It won’t damage the skin, but will penetrate deep and deliver the benefi ts where they can be absorbed.
When my children were little we used to use a Vaporiser with Wright’s Coal Tar liquid to create an easy breathe atmosphere which seemed to help everyone get a better nights sleep.
Homeopathic remedies can be taken two hourly; one tablet dissolved under the tongue until symptoms improve and then tail off gradually.
