Elaine, our very own DIY Gal is riding the Pitlochry Etape Caledonia 2014

There always has to be a few good reasons to do an event and over a 20 year period I have done my fair share of gruelling endurance biking events. However this time it is diff erent as I am not riding to win. This time it is to fund raise for Marie Curie Cancer Care and enjoy a day out biking with my twin brother Ali.

So why do it? Marie Curie is a fantastic charity which provides an invaluable service to people with terminal cancer. Marie Curie Nurse Specialists give them the choice to die at home. Many of us have experienced losing someone close to cancer, it is the hardest journey to encounter and endure. So for Ali and I it will be brilliant to raise money to help people that need this service.

The 81 mile course is stunning and

challenging and is also an old training route. I lived in the Enochdhu area for 10 years, a beautiful remote location in Perthshire and raced in cross country events throughout Scotland. It was and still is my outdoor haven biking in the summer and skiing Glenshee in the winter, and I am very glad that Stirling- shire mountain biking routes can compare.

The training schedule has started and I have 3 months to get in good shape. Most of the training will be done on the bike, however when the weather is bad I’ll train on the turbo and the concept rower.

On the 11th May we will raise money for a great cause and have a day out biking together, for the fi rst time in years. The competition will be between us, we will push one another and this in turn drives me to get fi t. We aim to ride the 81miles in less than 5 hours. As children every day biking with Ali was like racing and we loved it, fl at out everywhere. Caledonia Etape here we come!

If you would like to help me raise funds for Marie Curie Cancer that would be fantastic and you can go to the just giving website I have set up www.justgiving.com/Elaine-Hopley
