WORLD WATER DAY

Originally agreed during the UN Conference in 1992, World Water day is observed on 22nd March each year with the UN and member nations devoting the day to the world’s water resources.

Each year, one of the UN agencies will take the lead to promote international awareness and activities for the day which have included topics such as sanitation in 2008, Clean water for a healthy world in 2010 and Water Co- operation last year.

The World Water Day for 2014 is being co- ordinated by Unido and the United Nations University.

and Energy and the main celebrations will be taking place in Tokyo, Japan at the UNU headquarters.

Water and energy are closely interlinked and interdependent. Energy generation and transmission requires utilization of water resources, particularly for hydroelectric, nuclear, and thermal energy sources. Conversely, about 8% of the global energy generation is used for pumping, treating and transporting water to various consumers.

Working closely with Member States and other stakeholders the activities for the year will focus on inequities especially for the ‘bottom billion’ who live in poor conditions without access to safe drinking water, sanitation or suffi cient food and energy services.
