El Viejo
Te notion of a twin suggests symbiosis; a similarity that owes itself to their identical conception. For El Viejo, the small city near Chinandega in Nicaragua, it bears no resemblance to its twin whatsoever.
another of Norwich’s twin cities. With Koblenz, Germany, France’s Rouen and Novi Sad’s Serbia name-checked on our city streets and accounted for, El Viejo has been overlooked – by me at least, but I fear others too.

Our civic twinnings have served the purpose of sharing our culture with locations across the globe, but in the case of El Viejo, it’s more than our culture they really need. Twinned with Norwich in 1999, a year after Hurricane Mitch ripped through the already poverty- struck Nicaraguan municipality, Te Norfolk and Norwich El Viejo Friendship Link (already established since 1986) helped put the town back together.

ou’ll have to forgive my ignorance, but it was only this month that I learnt El Viejo was
42 houses were co-funded by Te Link and rebuilt after being destroyed by one of nature’s biggest aggressors. Tey called the settlement, ‘Norwich’. Hard to imagine, but in the wearing sun of Nicaragua, our own city’s spirit of solidarity plays its part.
Te work and support continues though, as it must, with particular emphasis on education in the town. Supporters of the Link are responsible for keeping 240 children in school, for just £3 a month as part of their Scholarship programme. Te £36 a year it costs to keep each child in education is primarily being met by Norfolk individuals now, with support dwindling from organisations Norwich City FC and the like.
To raise funds, ‘Spread the Love’ has
been organised as a fundraising gig at Norwich Arts Centre on Sat 15th Feb. Organisers of the upcoming fundraiser, Poppy Buller and Angela de Prairie explain; “Te schools shoes we give them are often the only pair of shoes the kids have. We have built schools, bought them computers and more. Tey need much more help, and they need it fast.”
Ougadougous, Crumbs for Comfort, Halfcut Heroes and more play the NAC on Sat 15th to raise funds. For tickets go to
