Specialized equipment adds fun and challenge to water workouts

ebbed gloves, pool noo- dles, buoyancy belts and water dumbbells. To the uneducated eye they’re
just water toys that make an aquafit class more enjoyable. To the well-in- formed they are much more: they’re serious resistance training tools. Some health professionals still
don’t get this, says Melanie Galloway, a Vancouver instructor who teach- es six classes a week at the Jewish Community Centre and the city-run Lord Byng Pool and who also offers water-based personal training. “I once had a participant with a
shoulder problem,” says Galloway, who has 20 years experience. “Her therapist

told her to stop weight training in the weight room but that it was fine to use dumbbells in the pool.” Galloway happened to know the
therapist, so she invited him to a water session where she spent an hour dem- onstrating the benefits and risks of ex- ercising with equipment in water. “When I gave him a large set of
dumbbells and asked him to push them down, he immediately knew his advice to his client had been inappro- priate,” she says. “The sweeping state- ment that water is always safe for exer- cise is just not true.”

aquafit equipment of the day was empty bleach bottles that partici- pants–mostly female older adults–held in their hands for resistance exercis- es and for extra buoyancy while in a floating position. Flutterboards, a mainstay of the
lane swimmers, were also frequently utilized in classes primarily for swim- ming pool lengths. Fast forward to today, and instructors
have a myriad of choices when it comes to equipment–and it has all been de- signed specifically with aquafit in mind. For many instructors, equipment
plays an important role in keeping fun, variety and challenge levels high in classes.
