LENORE ALBUM OF THE YEAR Rob ZombieVenomous Rat Regeneration Vendor'

Te title sounds like some random, tripped-out 1960's vinyl. Looks a lot like it too. Te self-styled 'hellbilly' frontman appears on the cover surrounded by swirling psychedelia looking like a cross between Frank Zappa and a cult leader. But this is, after all, Rob Zombie, a man who seems permanently caught in a horrific B- movie of his own making. Zombie offers twelve tracks in his signature style - with a Sixties twist. An album to listen to while driving a pick-up truck, with a body bag and shovel in the back.

PAUL JENKINS ALBUM OF THE YEAR Mogwai Les Revenants OST.

‘Gwai’s template of predominantly instrumental songs, sharing the Pixies/Nirvana quiet/loud dynamic, seems ideal for soundtracks work, but after numerous albums and EPs, this is only the second such commission. However, this is much more than just a soundtrack and can stand alone, up with anything in their back catalogue. 'Kill Jester' and 'Tis Messiah' are simply gorgeous, beautiful, moving pieces of music that represent all that is best about this most special of groups.

ALEX THROSSELL ALBUM OF THE YEAR Volcano Choir Repave

Whereas Volcano Choir’s previous effort Unmap was a fragile collection of fragmented ideas, Repave was conceived after Justin Vernon had taken centre stage amongst Bon Iver’s ever growing numbers and still managed to retain a great clarity to his song writing. On Repave, Volcano Choir finally sounds like a band, albeit with their most successful member resplendently at the helm. Tankfully for them Justin is no longer just bon, he’s incroyable. It’s an ambitious blend of old and new, but in only eight tracks, Repave managed to proudly unveil itself as a fitting successor in the Vernon lineage, and a sublime one at that.

LIZZ PAGE ALBUM OF THE YEAR John Grant Pale Green Ghosts.

2013 is the year I discovered John Grant, the bear-like troubadour with the most heartfelt songs I ever heard. His album Pale Green Ghosts is absolutely enthralling, with a song for every mood, from lonely and wistful right through to furious and passionate. Te title track is my absolute favourite, with its Pet Shop Boys style sound, but with that stab of sound, much edgier than they could ever be. It makes me happy that as an HIV positive gay man, he feels at ease to sing about his own experiences honestly and openly, when so many people cannot and do not do so, even in 2013. Love him.
