It’s not often we get to delve deeper, to flash our proverbial garter indicating a world of treasures beyond, but this month, we’ve decided to expose ourselves a little. We’ve amassed our ‘Best ofs…’ for 2013, but these are just a few examples – Hot Lists from the whole of our beloved team can be found at

EMMA GARWOOD ALBUM OF THE YEAR Half Moon Run Dark Eyes
With polarising introversion and extroversion, Dark Eyes speaks directly to the listener, with painfully tender cries over minor chord rivers of music that feel like they’re ebbing ever closer to the edge of a cliff. To smash a comparison into this small analysis, it’s the melodies and harmonies of Fleet Foxes with the schizoid rhythmical flare of Local Natives. Half Moon Run met on Craigslist and went from a situation of unfamiliarity with each other to create this. A tour and an album down, what in the great gods will they create next?

BEATRICE HOWARD ALBUM OF THE YEAR Los Campesinos! No Blues
A late release at the end of October this year, it was always going to be tricky for Los Camp to live up to their 2011 album, Hello Sadness. With such a cult following, people have been consciously waiting for this album for the best part of two years! Unlike their very early tracks like ‘Straight in at 101’ and ‘You, me, dancing!’ the album took a while to grow on me, but I began to love it relatively quickly. My favourite track is definitely ‘Avocado, Baby’; as well as being really catchy, if you listen carefully the lyrics are very witty, in true Los Camp style, of course.
GIG OF THE YEAR Disclosure @ Latitude Festival
TOP FIVE TRACKS OF 2013 Arctic Monkeys – ‘Knee Socks’ Palma Violets – ‘Best of Friends’ Frightened Rabbit – ‘Late March Death March’ Peace – ‘Love Sick’ She and Him – ‘Never Wanted Your Love’
WILL NIXON ALBUM OF THE YEAR Arctic Monkeys AM
In many respects the Arctic Monkeys you hear on this album are a new band; although the line-up remains the same, there’s a new sexiness, a new charisma surrounding the group. Tey’re not just four guys playing music anymore, they are Rock Stars. Tis album has the gift of sounding exactly like an Arctic Monkeys record whilst being nothing like their previous four. It’s completely jam- packed full of swagger, but rather than it being a Liam Gallagher – “I’m gonna smash yer in tha fookin mouth maate” bowlegged meander, it’s a Johnny Bravo – “Woah Mamma” strut.
GIG OF THE YEAR Arctic Monkeys @ Sheffield Motorpoint Arena
TOP FIVE TRACKS OF 2013 Kanye West – ‘Black Skinhead’ Arctic Monkeys – ‘Do I Wanna Know?’ Vampire Weekend – ‘Step’ Doc Daneeka – ‘Walk On In’ Drake – ‘Hold On, We're Going Home’
PHILIPPA ASKEW ALBUM OF THE YEAR Laura Mvula Sing To Te Moon
Mvula’s striking debut album is bursting with orchestral swoops and flitters, rightfully playing to her classical training. Out of that pours the most soulful voice, singing earnest lyrics, which makes way for the gospel and jazz elements of the album. ‘Like Te Morning Dew’ and ‘Tat’s Alright’ are explosions of sound, using a mass of instruments and harmonies. Saying that, there is always complete control in Mvula’s delivery, and my stand out tracks, ‘She’ and ‘Father Father’ pull back on the instruments and focus on Mvula’s beautiful voice. It’s a little musical ticket of escapism, and I assure you the moon is delightful.
