SPOTLIGHT ON OUR ASSOCIATES When people ask Rick Martin how he got started with his comedy dog act, he tells
them, “It was the acts I saw on the Ed Sullivan Show.” In particular it was a Spaniel named Louie and his overly excited trainer shouting, “You can do it, Louie!” This was a really funny act and at a very young age, Rick thought to himself, “That’s what I want to do when I grow up.” And here we are getting ready for the upcoming fair season and Rick Martin’s
Tricky Dogs Show is bigger and better than ever. His cast of canine clowns are all rescued from Florida’s animal shelters and being various forms of rascally little Terri- ers, they bring the frantic energy and excitement Jack Russell types are known for. All of the classic doggy tricks are there. Hoop jumping, barrel rolling, rope skipping,
balancing stunts and the high dive, but it is the comedy and audience interaction that sets the Tricky Dogs Show apart from most other animal acts. The lesson Rick learned from the Vaudeville dog acts was to structure the show to make it seem like the dogs were acting on their own and not following a trainer’s commands. Although this show is tightly scripted and well rehearsed, the Tricky Dogs appear to be naughty and uncooperative and that is what makes the show so funny. The dogs appear to be in control and they get the laughs as Rick plays the part of their stooge. Audience participation is a big part of the show and it gets even better when Rick invites young chil- dren from the audience to come onstage and be part of the act. In addition to his commitment to entertaining family audiences, Rick Martin is serious about meeting the needs of his clients. This
act works very well on a fair stage or as roving entertainment with their miniature antique fire engine. The Tricky Dogs Show travels with an RV that can support a thirty foot canvas back drop creating an outdoor circus style performing space complete with sound, lights and ground cover. Rick and his dogs are happy to share this space with other acts and Rick is glad to act as MC and stage manager for this outdoor theater. The Tricky Dogs Show is a proven and dependable crowd pleaser with years of experience playing to large crowds. Rick Martin is the author of “Circus Tricks For Your Dog” published by Sterling Press and this book can be found in just about every school and public library in Florida. Rick and his dogs are very well known to school age children throughout the state and this is the type of act
that kids want You can see video of the Tricky Dogs in action by visiting
