Graduate Profile Rachel Knight ... ... gains Most Outstanding Student award

Rachel Knight, a councillor with Wycombe District Council, has won an award as most outstanding student after gaining a first-class honours degree in law from Buckinghamshire New University.

Knight, 35, who represents Oakridge and Castlefield wards, received her degree during a graduation ceremony at the Wycombe Swan Theatre in High Wycombe. The dedicated graduate was also presented with the Most Outstanding Student award from technology firm, Prolinx.

She said: "I am so thrilled to have won the award and have loved my degree course from start to finish. My aim is to use my legal training to protect the rights and freedoms of ordinary and vulnerable people."

Knight kept up her work as a ward councillor while studying and received the award for consistently achieving high grades as well as working as a peer-assisted learning mentor, a student representative, and sitting on a number of panels of students on the degree.

She said: "The quality of teaching at Bucks New University was fantastic and the open-door policy the staff operate gave each student the opportunity to be individually supported in developing their potential.

"The course, staff and facilities at Bucks were of a really high standard and I would suggest that students looking for a career in law should take time to consider Bucks as a credible option when looking for quality legal training. I am proud to now say from first-hand experience that we have a locally-based law school we can be really proud of."

Councillor Richard Scott, leader of Wycombe District Council, said: "This award shows that Rachel has been as dedicated to her studies as she is to being a local ward councillor for Oakridge and Castlefield and on behalf of everyone at Wycombe District Council we congratulate Rachel on her outstanding achievement."

Simon Blackburn, director of Prolinx, said: "Rachel's commitment and desire is an example to everyone that, if you really want something in life then hard work, dedication and determination will get you there."

Knight now plans to take the legal practice course (LPC), the final stage to becoming a solicitor.

She received her degree certificate alongside 1,700 students and honorary graduands at Buckinghamshire New University's 2013 graduation ceremonies.
