• Ian White has joined the Thames Valley office of accountancy and business advisory firm, BDO LLP. White, who has over 10 years experience working in professional services in the Thames Valley, takes over responsibility for marketing and business development of the firm’s audit, tax and advisory services across the region. White succeeds Karen Meenderink,
who moves to a national role supporting BDO’s investment in Business Support Services (BSS). She is responsible for all aspects of the marketing and business development strategy for BSS which, post BDO’s merger with PKF, has considerable growth potential across the UK, with a key interface to BDO's international network. Meenderink remains based within the Thames Valley.
• Leading law firm Pitmans has appointed David Gwillim as partner, joining its highly successful real estate and construction team in Reading. Gwillim, formerly of Speechly Bircham LLP, has over 30 years’ experience in construction law, specialising in advising the construction and engineering industry at home and abroad on procurement, contract drafting, warranties and bonds, insurance, health and safety as well as dispute resolution. Gwillim’s aim is to work with his clients to manage construction risk to
produce a result that is on time, within budget and to specification. He is described by Chambers as ‘proactive’ and ‘creative and persistent in his lines of enquiry’.
• Henmans Freeth, Oxford’s largest law firm, has announced its round of autumn promotions, with 11 associates being made up to senior associate and one solicitor being promoted to associate. Lisa Mark-Bell (not pictured) is promoted to associate in the firm’s private client department. Gemma Nicholls (middle right) is promoted to senior associate in the family law team. • Professor Barbara Dexter has joined Buckinghamshire New University as director of learning and teaching. The post is a new role for Bucks, and Prof Dexter will take a lead in progressing the University’s learning and teaching strategy working alongside Prof Shân Wareing, pro vice chancellor learning and teaching. Prof Dexter, who is from Allestree, Derby, will direct the University’s teams in Careers & Employability, Open 4 Learning, and the Learning Development Unit, with a focus on delivering the best teaching and learning experience for the University’s students. She will also be responsible for developing institutional research for evidence-based practice. Prof Dexter joins Bucks New University from Victoria University of Wellington where she was director of Centre for Academic Development responsible for academic development activities; e-learning; policy development; and student feedback. Prof Dexter will be based at the University’s campus in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.
• Grant Thornton has announced the promotion of Richard Lewis to restructuring director. Lewis transferred from the firm’s Cardiff office in November 2012 to lead the restructuring service line across its Reading and Oxford offices. Lewis has 17 years’ experience of advising distressed businesses and their stakeholders, including in areas such as cashflow management, re-financing engagements, accelerated M&A, directors’ responsibilities and all forms of formal corporate insolvency. While he has worked across a variety of sectors, Lewis has leading roles in the firm’s asset- based lending and recruitment sector groups.
