It’s not just British nuclear power plants that are set to get investment from Chinese companies. Manchester Airport has secured investment from China, and London mayor Boris Johnson is working hard to ensure that the capital will not lose out in attracting support from Beijing
In the south, Thames Water is already 10% owned by China.
China likes investing in the UK. In fact, Britain attracts more than the double the Chinese investment of any other nation in Europe. Most investment is in energy and power, but China’s influence is widespread – witness Wanda’s ownership of nearly all of the Poole-based Sunseeker yacht company.
Huawei is making its mark in the Thames Valley. Earlier this year, the company opened a new UK headquarters at Green Park, Reading. This $20 billion turnover global ICT solutions provider ships millions of smartphones every year and is regularly ranked among the most innovative companies in the world.
China is in the UK in a big way. And it is set to get bigger. The Thames Valley’s M4 corridor plus the M3 into Hampshire and M40 into Buckinghamshire are poised for yet more inward investment from China as Beijing continues to expand its global reach.
It’s good to see that a delegation from Bracknell and Slough councils, plus Wilkins Kennedy and the Thames Valley Chamber recently visited China to promote the region to potential Chinese investors.
More of this relationship building is needed to ensure that the new inward investors go west, rather than east, when they step off the plane at Heathrow.
