Newbury College opens new doors for students

Newbury College has officially opened its new purpose-built professional training restaurant with special guests, Roger and Sue Jones from Michelin Star awarded restaurant, The Harrow at Little Bedwyn.

The new development – which has been made possible with the help of funding from a grant provided by the Education Funding Agency through West Berkshire Council – will enable hospitality and catering students to put into practice what they have learnt in theory classes, while foundation learning students can now gain work experience in a controlled environment.

The ceremony began with a welcome by Newbury College principal Dr Anne Murdoch OBE, followed by the official opening during which Roger and Sue Jones unveiled a commemorative plaque and addressed visitors with a talk on their experiences in the catering industry.

VIP guests included Mayor of Hungerford Cllr Martin Crane OBE, Mayor of Newbury Cllr Anthony Pick, Mayoress of Newbury Cllr Catherine Kent and Mayor of Thatcham Cllr Mike Cole. Guests were treated to canapés and a drinks reception served by the College’s catering students while touring the impressive facilities.

When Roger and Sue Jones visited the training kitchen they toured the facilities and gave a talk to students about the rare truffles they have helped discover at a local farm – the only truffle farm in the UK. Roger explained how they find truffles and excavate them from the ground, and went on to explain how they are used in cooking. He also demonstrated his lobster fish finger specialty.

Newbury College has a range of hospitality and catering courses for all levels and will be hosting an open evening on November 14.
