It’s been a busy time for the team at John Lewis of Hungerford – not to be confused with the big London department store of the same name, though sometimes it probably is.
The finalists were selected from a large group of talented young business people who were interviewed by partners from Haines Watts at their offices around the Thames Valley.
The challenge of deciding who should go forward and who would get knocked out was tough, especially as we’ve met candidates from all walks of life, running a huge range of interesting enterprises. They were all highly motivated young individuals and many seemed much older than their years in their knowledge and approach to business. Some talked of their business plan in great depth, emphasising the importance of such forward thinking.
Others said they looked forward to trying to win the mentoring sessions that come as part of the prize for this competition. Many of the best and most experienced business people
continue to take advice from a mentor or a non-executive director.
Hearing all the different stories and experiences is the truly exciting part for us – and then, of course, there is the finals. There is something very powerful about bringing people together who have applied for something, been selected and started the journey. The day is always exhilarating and rewarding for everyone who attends and we look forward to sharing the experience with you in the next issue.

The Berkshire-based specialist in iconic, hand-made kitchen furniture and other household goods squeezed its 40th anniversary celebrations into a 2012 that was already overflowing with Olympic and Queen’s Jubilee festivities. And this summer heralded the refurbishment of the original Hungerford showroom.
The company then embarked on a product launch by delving into the world of fitted and free-standing bedrooms from a new showroom at Wantage. The next natural step was to make all furniture pieces available through a new online shop.
The upgraded business – now 15 showrooms, including Oxford – sent the company shares up 50% in September, the biggest price rise among quoted companies in the Thames Valley.
Other Oxford companies also led the way in the share table during the month. Oxford Biomedica, which specialises in the development of innovative gene-based medicines, saw its price rise 34% after receiving £7 million funding to support the development of a centre of excellence in Oxford for specialist manufacture of therapies and to help create world-class excellence in supply chains.
Oxford Technology, which for 25 years has specialised in investing in start-up and early-stage technology companies, witnessed two of its companies enjoy a 25% rise in value.

How effective is your team?
As organisations become increasingly complex, deploying matrix management practices and ever more off-shoring, they have become increasingly dependent on the effectiveness of teams. And yet anyone who works in a team knows they are often less than effective with personalities and egos disrupting collaboration and dissipating energy.
To help organisations and managers quickly diagnose what might be blocking team effectiveness, training consultancy 3gHR, based

in Reading, has launched a free web-based team-assessment tool: TeamMatters.
The assessment, which comprises 25 questions, allows participants to appraise their teams through a number of key performance dimensions, enabling them to target performance improvement and address the priority behaviours that are holding them back.
TeamMatters is free of charge and available at:
