Judith Mercer Sparkle and shine this party season

Whether you have a diary full of events or just one office Christmas party to go to, finding the right outfit can prove a problem for many. Perhaps you’re worried about being seen in the same dress two years running, but don’t have the spare cash for a new outfit, or you just aren’t sure what style to choose, what’s appropriate or how to use accessories to complete your look.

Here are a few tips to help you sparkle in the party season

Dresses are most definitely ‘in’ at the moment and they are much easier to wear than separates. How many times have you bought a top and struggled to find the right skirt or trousers to go with it? A dress makes things much simpler and will immediately make you feel good.

For those who might be concerned about wearing the same old dress for yet another year, it’s amazing what a bit of statement jewellery can do to make an outfit look completely different. A bold necklace will focus attention on your face and give you a real confidence boost. Add some heels or a handbag to match the colours in your jewellery and you have a new look to a favourite dress.

It’s great to see some fabulous colours coming into the stores this season. There’s plenty of choice, which is very refreshing, but if black is your ‘safety blanket’ you will still have no trouble finding it. However, you could still try injecting a bit of colour by going for something like the Phase Eight dress pictured here, giving an ultra-feminine fifties look in its style, plus the gorgeous black lace over stunning blue. Accessories can be kept to a minimum with this look as it is a statement in itself!

The clocks have gone back and the nights are getting longer, so what do you have to look forward to? Party time of course. We may not be able to get out into the garden for a barbecue, but it’s the perfect time for merrymaking. Put your hair up, pop on your favourite lipstick and slip into the perfect little cocktail dress.

simple style, in an on-trend colour (pink or red this season) will have every woman in the room envious of how chic you look.

The opportunities to go for all-out glamour are few and far between these days, but if you are lucky enough to have an invitation to an event such as a charity ball, you might want to check out the fabulous range from Tony Bowls, available at Jessica David in Old Swinford. Finding an appropriate style for each occasion can be another stumbling block for many women. When should you wear long, is it okay to wear trousers etc,?

These days almost anything goes, but if you’re really unsure and you don’t have a printed invitation with the dress code clearly stated, it’s a good idea to get in touch with the host and find out what they will be wearing and how formal the occasion will be. Don’t be afraid to ask – it’s better to feel confident that you will be appropriately dressed, than nervous of getting it completely wrong.

As for the most flattering style for your body shape – try to make sure you choose an outfit that will show off your best features and skim over your problem areas.
