A coat is one of winter’s fashion essentials – but that doesn’t mean you have to forsake fashion for practicality. Here are my favourite buys this winter.
OK, so the summer seems forever away and months of freezing temperatures lay ahead, but there’s one reason fashionistas love the deep mid-winter … it’s time to show off a dramatic coat.
For Winter 13, there’s a wonderful choice of cover-ups. Masculine tailoring and cocoon shapes; traditional heritage fabrics and sumptuous lush leather; and monochrome and rainbow brights – whether you lean towards dramatic, androgyny or pretty and prim, no one style dominates.
With so many trends to follow, here are my top tips on how to shop for a new coat:

Investment dressing:Cheap rarely makes long-term economic sense – invest in the best and you’ll get a coat that will last years rather than seasons.
Find a style that suits your shape…and lifestyle: Longer lengths are ideal for taller figures, while cropped looks great on petites. Be wary of adding too much volume if you’re not lucky to possess a supermodel’s figure. If you want a coat to go with many outfits, neutral colours like camel and black make the most sense.
Try before you buy: Spend a good couple of hours on your search and you won’t regret your new purchase. Try on as many different colours and styles as your patience will allow.
Layer the look: Different textures and tones work wonders for a stylish winter
look.Using your coat as a base, go for full-on knit scarves, elbow-length gloves and over-sized snoods.
Go big on accessories: Statement belts are key this season and can change the look of a coat in an instant by cinching in it at the waist.
