Bonhams

The first Modern British paintings sale of the year in our New Bond Street salerooms, on 29th May was another clear example of Bonhams ability to source the kind of privately owned works desired by collectors and dealers alike. By value 90% was sold, with some staggering results achieved for fresh competitively priced works from private collections, over half the lots soaring above their estimates.

Of the ten works by L.S.Lowry (1887-1976) offered, only three were unsold, the highest price going to a pencil drawing of Agecroft Regatta which made £211,250 against a presale estimate of £70,000-100,000. Four Kyffin Williams (1918-2006) out of four were sold with a combined total of £130,600 and an equally clean run was experienced by the eight Edward Seago (1910-1974) oils, the highest of which, a view of Honfleur, fetched £49,250. Among the many hotly contested highpoints was an oil by Stanley Spencer (1891-1959) of Garden Path, Cookham Rise. Estimated at £400,000-600,000 it was finally secured for £769,250. An early and innovative pen and ink drawing by Lucian Freud (1922-2011) of an oil-bound puffin, dating from 1944, was propelled past its estimate of £200,000-300,000 to reach £385,250.

Among the offerings from the output of Henry Moore (1898-1986) a drawing in pencil, crayon, ink and gouache of Three Female Figures, formerly in the collection of Sir Eric Maclagan, Director of the Victoria & Albert Museum 1924-1945, almost doubled its upper sale estimate to £157,250, clearly demonstrating the value placed on provenance. Further highlights included works by Keith Vaughan, Walter Sickert, John Craxton and a delicately rendered Crucifixion scene by Eric Gill, wood engraved

in gold and presented in a tabernacle frame, which like so many of the works exceeded its estimate with some style to reach £15,000.
