The Mailbox Major Refurbishment Underway...


The major refurbishment of Birmingham’s luxury retail and lifestyle destination, The Mailbox, has begun.


The retail area within the iconic Mailbox will be radically transformed when it relaunches in 2015. The exciting plans, designed by Stirling prize-winning architects Stanton Williams, will see the entire retail mall enclosed and skylit, to create an Urban Room with new facades, finishes and store frontages.


As part of the refurbishment, Harvey Nichols will more than double in size to a 45,000 square feet unit at the heart of the Urban Room, creating a new signature store with a prominent window-display feature making it immediately visible to shoppers entering the area.


Twelve years ago, Harvey Nichols heralded a retail revolution in the region, embracing the boutique store format, showcasing a cherry-picked edit of fashion’s most coveted brands from internationally renowned names to new and niche labels of the moment. Today, the redesign, relocation and expansion will ensure it remains the most iconic fashion and lifestyle destination in the city. Departments currently performing beyond expectations such as Menswear and Personal Shopping will be rewarded with increased space allocation, whilst the store will also consider incorporating a more sophisticated hospitality offer.

L.K. Bennett, Jaeger, Gieves and Hawkes, Castle Fine Art (formerly Castle Galleries) and Daniel Footwear are already set to return in 2015, joining Harvey Nichols and Nicky Clarke who were the first to relocate to their new spot on Level 7 at the end of September. The Mailbox will also be attracting exciting operators who will further diversify the appeal and retail mix, with the company remaining tight-lipped on who they are – just for now!

retailers in the central mall area have closed, however, Harvey Nichols, Emporio Armani, Toni and Guy Essensuals and BBC Birmingham will stay open throughout the refurbishment, along with the scheme’s many bars, restaurants, hotels, commercial offices and car park.


A host of new technology paired with pioneering service levels to the retail industry also form part of the new scheme, enhancing the customer experience, whilst the new pedestrian areas also present opportunities to include the central space that will be created, which is set to play host to exciting events. David Pardoe, Retail Manager at The Mailbox said: “As with any major refurbishment, changes are taking place ahead of work starting on site, but we are committed to ensuring disruption is kept to a minimum for our customers and residents. Many people work in offices at The Mailbox and regularly use the car park so we will ensure that it is business as usual for them too. The Mailbox remains one of Birmingham’s most popular lifestyle destinations, with our bars and restaurants offering one of the best spots for dining out in the city. Our retail plans are so exciting; this significant investment will certainly transform the retail offering of the Midlands.”
