Brand new dawn for our great city
I am delighted to welcome the arrival of the new brand for the city: People Make Glasgow. It is a brand that will work in the many different media and situations in which it is needed to promote Glasgow and the wider city region. I believe personally that it is vital that Glasgow Chamber members and businesses in general throw their weight behind the campaign and give it our support. Scott Taylor and his team
at the Glasgow City Marketing Bureau will be rolling out the brand in a series of campaigns starting with ‘People Make Glasgow Creative’. The beauty of the brand is its
versatility – it can be used and will be used to promote many different parts of what the city has to offer its own residents, the people of Scotland and individuals and businesses from around the world.
The brand was given pride of place at our first Inspiring City Awards, held in September. Those awards marked the contribution of many remarkable people in giving something back to the community, a contribution over and above what they do in their day-to-day business lives. Brands and marketing campaigns have made a very important contribution to the city over the years, beginning, of course, with Glasgow Smiles Better. Glasgow: Scotland with style has made a worthy contribution
to the city. Now, our job is to take the new brand and the new campaign out to wider markets. The Glasgow Economic
Commission and the Glasgow Economic Leadership Board stressed that the city’s
brand should be as flexible as possible to promote the city in as many contexts as possible.

People Make Glasgow is a much more flexible
brand for use in marketing. It fits so well with the story we have to tell, with what the city has to offer. Glasgow attracts 2.2 million tourists each year
who generate £578 million for the local economy with many travelling from elsewhere in the UK and abroad to attend events such as Celtic Connections, Glasgow Film Festival, Glasgow International Comedy Festival and the World Pipe Band Championships. The Glasgow Economic Leadership Group has
identified tourism and major events as major growth sectors for the city economy from now until 2017. But the importance of brands and marketing
come not just in attracting tourists to our city, but also in the vital contribution they can make in drawing inward investment. We know from financial services firms, engineering companies and many other types of business that the reason they are making an investment in Glasgow is because of the quality of the people coming out of our colleges and universities.
