If you could stand up and defend anything, what would it be? Unbelievably the United States has one of the lowest life expectancy rates of any developed country in the world. In addition, we rank 29th in the world in infant mortality. Researchers have found that infant mortality rates (IMRs) are the lowest for infants born to women with private insurance, that IMRs are higher for women enrolled in Medicaid and that IMRs are highest for women who are uninsured. As a per- son who deals on a daily basis with the results of the broken healthcare system in our county, I would like to defend the Affordable Care Act (ACA) signed into law by President Barack Obama in 2010. For over 70 years healthcare reform has been attempted in our country.

Now that the ACA is the law of the land, people will no longer be at risk of losing everything they worked for because of an illness, people with pre-existing con- ditions will be able to acquire health- care insurance and because everyone will have insurance, illnesses will be able to be detected early on which will lower the healthcare costs to the tax- payers of the country who have been footing the bill for those without insur- ance for decades.

Most importantly, for the first time in our history, it is not a pre-existing con-

dition to be a woman. Woman, under the ACA, will be subject to the same premiums and benefits as men! The Affordable Care Act gives every citizen the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

I met Judy when I attended the WPEA/ BPW conference in July. Judy was one of the keynote speakers. Hearing her story, I knew immediately that I want- ed to tell her story to our readers. She proves without a doubt that we should never give up on our dreams. Many of us started our businesses with a dollar and dream, and by putting ourselves out there and networking and don’t be afraid to say what you need, you never know who will be listening to your conversations. ●
