Eldorado to build second pulp line in Brazil

razil’s Eldorado Celulose e Papel, which started up the world’s largest bleached eucalyptus


pulp mill at Tres Lagoas in 2012, has applied for funds to support the mill’s expansion with a second producti on line.


Eldorado applied in September


to the Development Fund of the Center-West (FDCO) at Campo Grande, in the presence of the Brazil’s Nati onal Integrati on minister, Fernando Bezerra, and the governor of Mato Grosso do Sul, Andrew Puccinelli.


The request is for R$1.4 billion (US$637m), representi ng 20 per cent of the investment required for the second line. Some R$6.2bn (US$2.86bn) is required for the completi on of the mill. The fi rst producti on line, which started up in November 2012,

PCA expands US footprint with Boise acquisition


Packaging Corporati on of America (PCA) has agreed to buy Idaho papermaker Boise in a deal worth almost $2 billion including about $750m of debt. Subject to approvals the acquisiti on is expected to be completed before the end of the year. Sales of the combined


companies totalled $5.5 billion in the year to the end of June with the combined packaging operati ons contributi ng 75 per cent, the remainder coming from Boise’s paper sales. Illinois-based PCA’s


containerboard capacity will increase 42 per cent to 3.7 million tons including the


September 2013 Boise’s DeRidder mill, which is being converted to container board


announced expansion of the D2 paper machine at Boise’s DeRidder mill. PCA’s corrugated products volume will increase by about 30 per cent as a result of the acquisiti on, and PCA’s market presence will expand into the Pacifi c Northwest.


Executi ve chairman of PCA Paul Stecko said: “The acquisiti on … provides the containerboard that PCA needs to support our strong corrugated products growth. The DeRidder containerboard mill is low cost, located in a very


good wood basket and, aft er the D2 machine conversion, provides almost one million tons of primarily lightweight containerboard.” Boise chief executi ve
