Pulp Paper & Logistics

Smurfit Czech boosts productivity Mobile technology is making it easier to capture and track inventory. PPL reports

office in the Czech Republic, it chose to transfer an established, successful Syspro batch mobile process from one of its UK divisions but recognised that it could offer better productivity when used to post real-time transactions directly from the shop floor. Smurfit Kappa is one of the

leading producers of paper- based packaging with more than 41,000 employees across 350 production sites in 32 countries. The Dublin, Ireland- based company’s main business is corrugated packaging board, but it is also a leader in other markets including solid board and graphic board packaging. A Syspro user since 2010, Smurfit Czech had already

benefitted from its enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems and had further streamlined its sales order processing system from end-to-end. But with the advent of real-time mobile technologies and having to deal with increasing order volumes, Smurfit Czech’s packaging specialist Lukáš Konývka identified a way of further improving productivity. The K3 Syspro mobile

scanning system simplifies the managing of inventories, receiving purchase orders and picking orders. It also complements the powerful inventory management features of Syspro and provides real time transaction processing to enable quick and accurate data entry from barcode labels. This effectively eliminates issues associated with manual data entry and transcribing notes

from paper documentation. Once scanned the information flows through to Syspro in real time, to update its central database. “Now that we have mobile

scanners installed, we have made the process of movements in stock much faster than it was before because we are able to send data to Syspro directly from the shop floor. This means that we are completing orders a lot quicker than we were previously doing and are now more reactive to increased demand and high volumes of orders,” says Konývka. In keeping with Syspro’s

intuitive approach, the K3 Syspro requires minimal training because it is developed specifically for seamless integration with ERP. This eliminates the need for further

Energy efficiency improvements at Pakistan Packages

Pakistan’s Packages Limited, based in Lahore, has been supported by Voith to reduce energy consumption and increase efficiency on its TM9 tissue making line. At the beginning of 2013 Voith

installed head insulation on the Yankee cylinder and improved its internal condensate removal system, saving 210 kg of steam per hour. This also increased the speed of the line to 2,000 metres per minute. Hyder Ali, chief executive of

Packages Limited, said: “Voith has September 2013

been a good partner for us for years. We were very satisfied with the installation of our TM9 tissue machine. From the beginning the machine produced the highest quality, which has not only strengthened our position in the Pakistani market, but has also driven demand from abroad. “We are working on an ongoing basis with Voith on further improvement of the machine and to achieve low energy consumption. We have thus succeeded in operating the TM9 at this new speed

level. We are not resting on this success, but rather are constantly working to achieve even higher goals.” The tissue machine supplied by

Voith was started-up in 2008. It has a MasterJet T headbox, a suction press roll concept, a 16-foot cast Yankee cylinder and a MasterReel reeler. Established as a joint venture

with Swedish packaging producer Akerlund & Rausing in 1958, Packages Limited makes paper, board and tissue. Recently, it founded a joint venture in Kasur,

training and means that the staff at Smurfit Czech that are already trained to use Syspro could adapt very quickly to the operational features of the mobile solution. Konývka adds: “One of the

initial concerns we had with introducing a real-time mobile solution was the amount of time that the implementation process would take, coupled with additional resources and time we would have to commit to further staff training. But we soon realised that the real-time mobile solution did not operate too differently to Syspro itself. We were able to use the scanning equipment more or less immediately after they were connected to the system which was a major benefit. The Implementation process itself was quick and totally hassle free, so we were able to achieve

Pakistan, with Stora Enso. The company employs about 3,000 and in 2012 had sales of about €185 million.
