Zero tolerance could be costly

APPLYING azero-toler- ance approach to cross- species contamination could jeopardise the future of abattoirs in

Wales. Modern technology can detect

the slightest traces of DNA, thereforeonlymeatfromasingle species could be processed in one plant if therewas no degree of tolerance. Wales’ farming minister Alun Davies said adopting apolicy

that would guarantee all meatis free from contamination from other species could provevery costly. “If we want to absolutely

guarantee single species DNA the cost to the processor will be enormous.Multi species process- ing plants will be athing of the past,”MrDavies said during a RoyalWelsh Showdebateonthe horsemeatcrisis. “Weneed to consider as a

society if thatiswhatwewant. I would volunteer caution in going down thatroute.” But conversely, meatadulter-

ation wasvery definitelyacrimi- nal act, he insisted. “In my ownviewtherehas

been clear illegality in the UK and elsewhereinthe European Union,”hesaid. “Weneed to have systems in

place to prevent species substitu- tion.”

During the debate,Farmers’ Union of Wales president, Emyr

Jones, called forall those involved in the horsemeatscan- dal to be jailed. “They have harmed the beef

industry tremendously,”sid Mr Jones. “Asfarmers we keep to the

rules, wehaverules as long as my arm, and we can live with those.” The debate washosted by Aberystwyth University.Itsaid important questions had been raised about food authenticity and security of supplyfollowing the horsemeatcrisis.
