Wales Farmer September 2013 SHEEPDOG TRIALS

World trial qualifier marred by weather

THEdouble fetch 2014 WorldTrial qualifier for south Wales handlers was held over two days at Blaenglowon Fawr, Talgarreg, with 30 entries

per day. The top five dogs from each

dayqualified forthe team, with sixth place taking areserve spot. On the first dayearly morn-

ing mist delayedproceedings, and the daywas marred by heavy rain. The course was challengingwitha1,000 yard first outrun out to the left. The land fell away from the post and therewas along, deep gulley up the field. Dogs could go out of sight forsome time and could be thrownoff course by the gul- ley and, if they went out wide, by hedge boundaries. Two pack- ets of eight sheep from the

mixed flock were set out and a number of dogs had trouble on the look-back to gather their second packet of sheep. The sheep could split on the

fetch and needed good handling to keep them together and get them through the gates. The drive away wastothe right with ashort cross-drive to ahurdle which the sheep had to be brought around. Back in the ring handlers had

to shed the four collars, and herethe sheep could be very tricky. Twoearly morning runs on

dayone set the standardand stayedontop all day. Llyr Evans ranSam, down 34, to takesecond place, and he was followedbyIan Jones with Tom, whobeathim by two points to win.

TRICKY CONDITIONS: Nigel Watkins and Molly, on day one of the World Trial qualifier.
