and unique. Yoga has always been the best treat of all my tricks!” In yoga, we often think of a yin and

yang approach, where yin is cooling, relaxing and soothing and generally involves deep stretches and slow deep breathing. Yang is the opposite: warm- ing, energizing, heart elevating, and focuses on power-based postures. For some clients, this yang approach

of upping their adrenaline and push- ing them through an entire session is exactly what they need, especially for those who lead sedentary lifestyles. However, for some people, like high intensity corporate executives, they typically benefit from a more yin ap- proach. Yoga provides both. In a personal training session, we in-

corporate the major components of fit- ness including cardiovascular capacity and endurance, muscle strength and endurance, and flexibility. We can see and measure how our clients lose fat, gain muscle and improve their cardio output and VO2 max. Yoga sessions offer the same com- ponents but in a slightly different

structure: the cardiovascular work comes from deep breathing; strength and endurance comes from holding pos- es; and flexibility is a focus throughout. After incorporating yoga into her

personal training sessions, Milja Oliveric of Brampton, Ont., was able to dramatically assist two of her clients using restorative-based postures and breath alone. “One client who has bronchiectasis

(a rare lung disease) finds lying in fish pose using the three-minute eggs (oval shaped blocks) placed under the tho- racic spine very beneficial,” she says. “It opens up his chest and allows him to slow down his breathing and take bigger breaths.” “Another client with cerebral palsy

has a big build up of stress and tension in his body,” she adds. “Yoga allows him to slow down his breathing and release the negative tension. Using the three- minute eggs and deep breathing has im- proved his posture (since he is always in a forward flexion because he uses crutches) and the ability to cope with daily stress.”
