We Remember


1928 VIRGINIA HOLLAND WILCOX Virginia Holland Wilcox attended St. Helen’s Hall, graduating in 1928. She died at the age of 98.


SHH 1935, JC 1938 ANITA CADONAU BIRKLAND Anita passed away


on April 3, 2013, shortly after her 94th birthday. She graduated from St. Helen’s Hall in 1935, the Junior College in 1938, and Reed College in 1941 (Phi Beta Kappa). Later facing “empty nest syndrome” after her son Roderick left for the Army and Wendell entered law school in 1969, she returned to school at California State College Fullerton and received two master’s degrees in English literature. Then, in 1984 at age 65, she received her PhD in European Studies from Claremont Graduate School, followed by membership in MENSA at age 70. Anita met Raymond Birkland at the Foursquare Church, and they married in 1938. Raymond predeceased her in 2002 after 63 years of marriage. They worked together at Alpenrose Dairy (her family’s business) until 1958, subsequently moving to Anaheim to open an Original Pancake House. They worked and lived there for 40 years. When Raymond’s health began to decline in 2000, they returned to Portland to be near family. One of the great delights of her life was travel. She visited over 135 countries and exposed her children and grandchildren to many travel experiences. Anita was also a lifelong member and volunteer in the Foursquare Church.


1947 ANN MUIR CROOK Ann Muir Crook passed away on February 12,


2013, at the age of 83. Ann was born in Portland on August 5, 1929, to Ross and Lela Muir. After graduating St. Helen’s Hall, Ann attended the University of Oregon, graduating with a BA in business. She was also a member of Chi Omega sorority. It was at U of O that Ann met John Crook, and they married in 1952. The couple returned to Portland and had two children, Ross ’74 and Matthew ’77. In addition to raising her family, Ann spent a number of years working with her husband as his secretary and office manager. Ann traveled throughout much of her life for both business and pleasure. A voracious reader, she read up on each of her travel destinations, becoming her own tour guide. In the mid-1980s, John and Ann became the proud owners of a family boat (“Puffin”). Annual summer/fall cruises of Washington and British Columbia were always eagerly anticipated by family and friends. Her passion for boating also led her to become an active member of the Tacoma Yacht Club.


1950 CAROLE NEWTSON Carole Jeane Newtson died in Tucson on March 30, 2012.


Carole grew up in Pendleton and attended the Hall. After graduation, she worked in Portland for General Motors before becoming a stewardess. At that time a stewardess had to be 21


years old and single. She had to meet a certain weight. Her hair could not touch her collar, and she wore nylons, girdle, and high heels at all times. The uniforms, overcoat, blouses, scarves, skirts, and jackets were all designed by famous designers like Ralph Lauren and Oleg Cassini. Carole was a stewardess for TWA for 40 years. After moving to Tucson from New York at age 75, Carole bought a car and got her driver’s license.


1951 ELISABETH ANNE SHERIF Elisabeth passed away on February 11, 2013. As a concerned citizen, interior designer, artist, and poet, she was very involved in helping shape and influence the lives of her family and community through politics and the arts. Her family remembers her for her example in helping to build a more loving and peaceful world.


1955 MARCIA MILLS MORRIS Marcia Lois Mills Morris passed


away on October 5, 2012, at her home in Pleasant Hill, California. Marcia was raised on a family farm in Oregon and graduated from St. Helen’s Hall in 1955. She lived in Pleasant Hill with husband Robert Morris since 1984. Together they built a business and retired 15 years ago. She was an active and adoring “Granny,” avid gardener, talented painter, and great cook, and she loved spending time with family and her many friends.


1984 MARK KNAPP Mark passed away on February 3, 2013. Mark


only spent his senior year at OES and then went to Lewis & Clark College and Occidental College, from which he graduated in 1989 with a bachelor’s degree in diplomacy and world affairs. In his career, he was general manager of several hotels and, after his father’s passing in 2007, he worked mostly for the family estate. Mark was a multitalented individual, known for his sharp mind and his interest in poetry, journalism, the legal process, and a unique mixture of music consisting of jazz and Johnny Cash. He had no children himself, but his nephews and the children of his life partner, Gena McGregor, looked up to him for guidance. Most of all, Mark is remembered for his kind heart, quick humor, and compassion for helping others.


DICK ALEXANDER Richard C. “Dick” Alexander passed away October 16 at his home


surrounded by his family. He was born in Humboldt, Tennessee, to Mildred and Clarence Alexander. He joined the Marine Corps in 1954 and subsequently attended Memphis State University. Introduced to the Pacific Northwest while undergoing a portion of Marine Corps training, Alexander returned to Portland in 1965 to found Viking Industries Inc. and later Viking International. Dick focused his later years on education in Oregon, with an emphasis on
