Office recently revised its materials and as part of that process asked “what our alumnae/i do.”
Frankly, I found it to be a difficult question. Sure, we can talk about the number of people in any given field, but that wouldn’t really get to the heart of “what you do” in your schools, work lives, and communities. To make things easier, we decided to limit ourselves to the people we had interacted with over the past year. Even with that limited viewpoint, this rather amazing overview was revealed:
ENTREPRENEURS: OESians create and innovate. In the past year, we have talked with alumnae/i who own eight local restaurants, two Portland-area wineries, and an upscale barbershop in Seoul. Also two fashion designers, two phone app designers, four film/video company owners, two marketing firms, and a nonprofit founder based in the Netherlands are helping women in emerging Asia.
WRITERS: Amongst our writers, we are proud to include a National Book
Class Reps Nan Glover Brasmer ’56
Judy Carson Kauffman ’60 Julie Mack Penge ’60 Lynn Perryman Haye ’61 Joanne Dobson ’63 Julie Krause Harriman ’64 Ellen Wheeler Guest ’65 Katherine Karafotias ’66 Toni Webb ’70 Jyrki Koskinen ’76 Neena Fromm Nuhring ’77 Allison Root Roberts ’78 Carrie Loar Cool ’80
Class of 1963
Award winner, a science fiction writer, a Reuter’s journalist, an award-winning poet, a sports blogger, a Singapore-based children’s book author, and countless freelance newspaper, magazine, and technical writers.
GOVERNMENT: OES has been producing thoughtful citizens of the world since its founding including Clara Munson (class of 1880), the first woman mayor in Oregon. Today, we are proud to include in our alumnae/i ranks an Oregon state senator, several alumnae/i involved in regional or state politics, at least two diplomats, and one person in the Obama administration.
MUSIC, THEATER, FILM: Alumnae/i involved in the performing arts include the artistic director of an opera company, the executive director of an internationally prominent chamber orchestra, at least two theater
co-founders, a playwright, a lighting designer for Pixar, one actor in an Academy Award- nominated movie, one Grammy-nominated saxophone player, and two rock stars.
SCIENCE, COMPUTER SCIENCE, MATH: Tis year, I talked with an alumnus who is working in a lab to create new food sources, two mathematical statisticians, a biological engineer working on issues related to the immune system, environmental leaders, and several computer programmers.
OTHER: You are teachers (countless, including three here at OES), lawyers (in all fields), financial wizards (including one listed as one of the Top 25 Most Influential Investment Consultants), emergency physicians, doctors, teaching doctors, archaeologists, librarians, pilots, parents, volunteers, and scholars.
Tis list is incomplete,
and I know it will continue to grow. Tis year, we implemented a career networking opportunity for alumnae/i just graduating from college. Help us build this wonderful program, by emailing us at
alumni@oes.edu with the details of your career.
Lastly, a recounting of our alumnae/i community would be incomplete without recognizing the class of 1963, 16 of whom gathered for their 50th Reunion at graduation. We were thrilled to honor this wonderful class. Tank you!
