the Emerald City for a year. Let me know if you’ll be in the area! No matter where you’ll be this year, drop me a line for any reason at

EMMA NEWMAN After an amazing bike tour in California, I started my new job with the City of Eugene as the Sunday Streets coordinator. My job consists of planning two open streets events (similar to Sunday Parkways) in which we celebrate active transportation and healthy lifestyles as a community. Cars are cleared from the streets and people use the public space for running, biking, dancing, juggling, and more. I am incredibly excited to be starting this job, and if any of you are in Eugene July 21 or September 8 you should attend! For more information please visit

2010 ALEXANDRA ASHWORTH Buenos días from Buenos Aires. A new semester is in full swing nowadays, but last December I found myself basking on the beaches of Rio, piranha fishing and snuggling monkeys in the Amazon, inter alia. Upon my return to Argentina, my family visited. We were joined briefly by Zoe Schmertzler ’10. When my family finally left me for sleet and snow, I did not stay put for long—Rio de Janeiro was calling me back. Carnaval was indescribable; I made friends with people whose
2010 SIMON NARODE I just moved back to Portland from Eugene, taking a couple terms off from school.
2011 CONNOR JOHNSTON Hey OES! I currently attend NYU in the Tisch School of the Arts studying drama. I just finished my second year training with a production of The Rimers of Eldritch by Lanford Wilson. The character I played was a definite challenge, but I know I learned a lot. I’ve definitely come a long way since OES productions in the Great Hall! I am spending this summer in Amsterdam studying acting at the International Theatre Workshop. Miss you all!

paths I never would have crossed, learning life lessons from strangers through a constant flow of conversation in whatever mix of languages we could keep up. Now back in Buenos Aires, I find myself walking streets I have come to know, directing tourists to bus stops just as I do in Portland. I realize that though I will be relieved as I go north, I will miss the adventures and the novelty of this dream-like life when I return home.

ANDREW STOUT I am currently at Rice University in Houston, Texas, studying materials science and engineering.
This summer, I will be taking a three-month trip to the Netherlands to work in a lab that I first heard about in Kara Tambellini’s “Food Journalism” class my senior year at OES. The lab is focused on growing meat in vitro and has so far been successful in creating the first-ever fully lab-grown hamburger (although it cost $300,000). I will be working on developing a synthetic scaffold to promote the muscle tissue growth. I am extremely excited (despite having just watched Taken) and can’t thank Kara or #LitJournalismFoodThuggin2011 enough for the inspiration! (Even if she gave me a “B.”)
