WHAT FAMILIES HAD TO SAY

“Other than the information I have had in the national media, there has been little permeated through to the families to whom this will undoubtedly affect. I know of many families who are not aware of what it covers.”

“The info gets swallowed up in all the other stuff we get sent and it does not stand out as something worthy of particular note.”

“If a serving member of the Armed Forces hadn’t heard about It, how will the public have heard about it?”

“You read all sorts in the magazines but it is difficult to understand how we are affected by it all - it is not black and white enough.”

“There doesn’t appear to be a lot of publicity on the Armed Forces Covenant. Although I know there is one I’m not sure how it benefits me as its launch just came and went. There is so much austerity in the Armed Forces at the moment I think personnel have other things on their minds. It is rarely spoken about.”

“The Covenant is a great idea and certainly worth pursuing but it has to be adopted as law, or else authorities can then just pick and choose what they action. Until then it is fairly toothless.”

“It is early days for the Armed Forces Covenant. However, I have heard nothing bad about its effects, and I expect the positive aspects to come more to the fore as it becomes ‘second nature’ to the authorities and agencies that support us and our families.”

“I read about it in the station magazine. The Mayor of Wolverhampton council has signed up to it and this is good news. But, apart from that I haven’t anything else. This may be because we do not need anything from the local community yet.”

“Taking a somewhat cynical viewpoint, I’m concerned that councils are undertaking Armed Forces Covenant activity more for their own self-advertising than for any meaningful reasons. Whilst the rhetoric and glossy-brochures look promising, the ‘ground-truth’ from public-sector spouses of my troops is that Service personnel are unlikely to be looked upon any more favourably than before the existence of the Covenant. However, what has been beneficial is the Community Covenant funding, albeit only through the outstandingly proactive work of my Unit’s point of contact.”

“RAF Wittering is very well supported both by Stamford (the local town) and Peterborough (the unitary authority in which the Stn sits). Both have embraced the Community Covenant idea; and Peterborough, in particular, is very active in seeking to attract funding for mutually-beneficial projects.”

“As I have never heard of it, it’s clearly not been well advertised. Which is very poor considering it’s apparently supposed to enhance our community.”

“I feel that the aim of the Covenant is ideal but then having local authorities actually put the requirements fully into practice is simply not actioned for a number of reasons, including not wishing to commit finance and not actually understanding the requirement.”
