Twelve months on
To enable us to make meaningful judgements about whether levels of awareness and perceptions of the Armed Forces Covenant have improved, we included a number of questions in this survey we had previously asked in our ‘Nations Support to the RAF’ survey twelve months ago.
When we asked about support to the RAF, we received a similar range of responses, year on year. 88% of voters this year felt that the general public supports the RAF to a great, or some extent, a decrease of 4% on 2012; 69% felt the same about the Government, a 2% increase; and 76% told us they felt that their local community supported them, an increase of 3%.
It was interesting to note however, the number of comments received this year from both serving and non-serving family members who were clearly frustrated by the way the Service is portrayed in the media. It was felt the RAF and RN are not generally acknowledged by the media and that the government and general
public simply see the ‘the military’ as the Army. The support to the Olympics was one oft-quoted example, where many felt the RAF’s contribution on the ground was too often described by the media as having been provided solely by the Army. Many respondents felt this contributed to a misinformed public perception of the RAF.
a third of all voters felt that it is making no difference
A new question was introduced this year to determine if our people think the Armed Forces Covenant is actually enhancing support to the military community as a whole. Initial analysis identified that a third of all voters felt it is making no difference but perhaps more significantly, the data revealed that many of those Service family
members who took part in the survey, regardless of their status, still have no clear understanding of the Covenant and how it should be supporting them. (Figure 1).
