“There are improvements but we are paying for it with increased rents when salaries are not increasing alongside. I don’t long for a modern trendy kitchen that will put our rent up a grade costing us another £1000 plus a year in rent (and £1000 a year less in our house saving fund for after service life). What I want is a damp and mould-free house that is safe health- wise to live in - which should be available in all SFA whether a grade 4 with a 1950’s kitchen or a grade 1 house.”
“There is still huge inconsistency in the type and quality of service housing available to you, long delays in obtaining housing in many cases, further deteriorating quality of life for families. Further, the inconsistencies lead to ranges in grading’s causing significant financial penalty now due to the variable rates you have to pay to live at one base v another. If the intent is to squeeze people out, then it’s a good strategy. Grade 1 rents for SSFA and Grade 1 MQ are too much for many. Yes, they are cheaper than the norm outside, but we don’t choose where we live or how often we move - the RAF does. That mobility restricts second spousal income opportunities - and spousal incomes are typically necessary outside now to fund ‘market’ rents.”
“Trying to get repairs carried out is difficult when they are done it is usually the cheapest short cut possible resulting in a short term fix with more repairs needed shortly afterwards, we call it botch it and scarper. 10 days with no heating and MHS think 2 fan heaters is adequate to heat a four bedroomed house in the middle of winter.”
“I have just moved into the worst accommodation I have ever had the pleasure of occupying during my marriage to my husband and while living with my parents (both in the Forces)! Mould, archaic plumbing, broken windows and a concrete garden are all glorious features of my new home but what is unique about this home is that it is situated on a very dilapidated estate. Empty houses surround me with broken fences, windows and scaffolding propping up condemned houses!!! This is the first home that has brought me to tears!! Thank you MoD.”
“I find DIO unhelpful and their lack of communication within themselves and with their support organisations poor.”
“Maintenance wise it is shocking. They are more concerned about money and a quick fix. Although DIO and Modern Housing don’t seem to realise that if they did the repairs properly in the first place they would save money by not having to send out engineers over and over again for the same problem and another quick fix. The mind boggles.”
