IMPROVING EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR SERVICE FAMILY MEMBERS

One of the aims of the Armed Forces Covenant is to highlight and overcome some of the challenges faced by non-serving spouses/partners when trying to gain employment. The MoD has worked with the Department of Work and Pensions to raise awareness within the military community of the Armed Forces Champions, who are located in each JobCentre Plus district. The Champion’s role is to provide information to non-serving family members on local labour markets, training opportunities and details of benefits they may be entitled to, as well as assistance with finding

and applying for jobs. We

asked voters whether the non-serving

spouse/partner in their family is employed and if so how they found the job. 54% of voters told us that this either did not apply or the non-serving spouse/partner was not working. Only 2% of respondents found their job through JobCentre Plus; the rest sourced their information through either an on-line job notice, an advertisement in the printed media or by word of mouth.

Are you aware of the support facilities available to non-serving family members through JobCentre Plus?
