“I am a specialist who cannot find work since my husband was posted to Scotland - I send countless job applications out and feel I don’t get work, being both English (very much Scottish jobs for Scottish people here) and also having a military address - JobCentre Plus advised me to apply for ‘shop assistant positions’!!!!!! Other ‘advice’ was ‘Use this tour to have a baby!?’ This is the first time that my husband’s posting has led to us having a lesser quality of life - I cannot wait for him to be posted back to England - a year (of hell) to go.”

“Most of my postings have been 18 months to 2 years and by the time my wife had got the house sorted and made sure the children were settled it was almost a waste of time trying to find a decent job, as no sooner had she started she would be looking to leave again. Most of her jobs have been menial ones and have not allowed her to reach her full potential or make use of her skills and qualifications. I truly am grateful to her for all that she had to give up and sacrifice to be my wife and to allow me to continue in my career and for her to remain completely unfulfilled in her career. It must have been difficult for her to be enthusiastic about going out to clean planes or single service personal accommodation with the sort of qualifications she has.”

“I wish I had a non SFA address when applying for jobs.”

“Has the loss of child benefit affected commissioned personnel as a group disproportionally? Especially considering that a second income is harder to gain for spouses? It’s not so much childcare that is a problem... It’s the right quality and type of childcare. Especially difficult for older children.”

“Childcare is a significant barrier to work. The Serving person cannot be relied upon to help with childcare because of the nature of the job which means nursery fees are high; £48 per child per day here”.

“If I knew that there were support facilities through JobCentre Plus, then we would take advantage of it.”

“I have had to end my career in order to keep our family together and support my husband. I don’t mind this as family means more to us, but it would be nice to earn some money and contribute again, and not be so tight for money all the time. I have worked since leaving school and yet am not entitled to anything and if I try for Job Seekers Allowance I’m made to feel like scum - it’s not our fault.”

“I avoided mentioning my husband being in the RAF until I had secured a job as I was apprehensive about being turned down because of the military ties and the frequency of moving home.”

“Every time I have moved the Job Centre has been incredibly unhelpful about helping me find work. I was even told once that I shouldn’t be applying for a job as I wasn’t a local!!!”
