We also asked whether families were aware of the support facilities that should be available to them through JobCentre Plus. Figure 7 illustrates that, despite the fact that this has now been in place for more than two years, there is still very limited awareness amongst the RAF community. More work still needs to be done to communicate the services provided by the Armed Forces Champions, so family members have a better understanding of what is available to them and can be more confident when asking for assistance while trying to find employment.

childcare continues to be the main problem

In instances where the non-serving spouse/ partner had not applied for a job, we asked for the reason to establish whether there were any particular concerns specific to Service families.

Figure 8 clearly illustrates that childcare continues to be the main problem. However, it is not only the cost and quality that are of issue but also the lack of flexibility. Also many commented that employers are not willing, or able, to allow staff to work alternative or reduced hours whilst the Serving family member

is on operational duties, for example. This can have a huge impact on whether the non-serving spouse/partner is able to gain, and remain in, paid employment whilst managing their childcare needs.

From the following list, what is the MAIN reason why the non-serving spouse/partner in your family has not applied for a job?
