MERIT AWARD PROJECT: CITÉ DU SURF ET DE L’OCEAN, BIARRITZ, FRANCE LIGHTING DESIGN: L’OBSERVATOIRE INTERNATIONAL The oceanographic seaside museum Cité de l’Ocean et du Surf glows calmly while darkness falls. The lantern effect is achieved with the use of uninterrupted peripheral covers with dimmable high-efficien- cy florescent fixtures turning on in synchrony with sunset. One judge stated that the finished project is “a soft and elegant building with soft and elegant lighting – a perfect match!” Inside, the ceiling of the exhibition area is convex, reminiscent of the nearby sea and its waves. Absolutely no fixtures were allowed in the ceiling, so the light scheme offers a totally uncluttered and smooth horizontal surface.

PROJECT: LAKEWOOD CEMETERY GARDEN MAUSOLEUM, MINNEAPOLIS, USA LIGHTING DESIGN: HGA ARCHITECTS + ENGINEERS The design for the new 24,500 sqft Lakewood Garden Mausoleum re- spects that individuality, human scale and a connection to nature are paramount. Seamlessly integrated into the architecture and HVAC, the lighting design artistically highlights the architectural forms, enhances the physical characteristics of the materials, and uses light and shadow to heighten the spiritual qualities of the space. “The highlighting of materials and coordination with the architecture was perfect,” one judge stated.
Because the building is primarily used during daylight hours, the artificial lighting serves to balance the abundant daylight from the windows and skylights while creating an intimate environment when daylight fades away.
MERIT AWARD PROJECT: TOKYO SKYTREE, TOKYO, JAPAN LIGHTING DESIGN: SIRIUS LIGHTING OFFICE INC The world’s tallest self-supporting standing lighting structures at the height of 634m, the Tokyo Skytree’s lighting is inspired by Mount Fuji retaining snow on its crest and its gradual blend into the earth. Two lighting themes based on Tokyo’s aesthetic spirits ‘Iki’ (sophisticated and dynamic) and ‘Miyabi’ (gracefulness) appear alternately every night.
“Internally lighting a project of this scale and form factor is a challenge that was overcome by the designers of this project,” one judge stated. “With so many building façades being lit in a way that might become dated or passé, this design appears to be subtle yet stunning at the same time.”
The design team focused on Japanese-style design and minimizing power consumption by applying light and shadow and using ‘Wa (Japanese) colour’ of blue and purple. All light sources are LED.

Zehn Preisträger, die architektonische Beleuchtungs- designprojekte aus neun Ländern repräsentieren - die verschiedenartigste Projektgruppe der letzten Zeit - und die die Gewinner des 30. Annual International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) International Lighting Design Awards umfassen, wurden auf einer Präsentation ausgezeichnet, die am 24. April im Crys- tal Tea Room in Philadelphia, USA, stattfand. Von den zehn anerkannten Projekten hat ein Auftritt eine lo- bende Erwähnung, sechs eine Verdienstauszeichnung und drei einen Kompetenzpreis gewonnen. Der Gewin- ner mit der höchsten Punktzahl in allen Kategorien erhält neben einen Kompetenzpreis für sein Projekt den IALD Radiance Award für Excellence im Beleuch- tungsdesign. Gewinner des Radiance Award erfahren ihren Radiance Award-Gewinnerstatus nicht im Voraus — nur dass sie bei der abends stattfinden-
den Preiszeremonie anwesend sein sollten. Gewinner des Radiance Award für Excellence im Beleuchtungs- design war Gerd Pfarré von Pfarré Lighting Design für die U-Bahn-Haltestelle Hafencity-Universität in Hamburg, Deutschland.

Dieci pluripremiati provenienti da nove nazioni di- verse, che rappresentano altrettante esperienze nella progettazione dell’illuminazione, il gruppo più etero- geneo di recente memoria, costituiscono i vincitori del trentesimo Premio annuale per la progettazione nel campo dell’illuminazione della IALD (Associazione in- ternazionale dei progettisti dell’illuminazione). Han- no ricevuto questo riconoscimento alla presentazione che si è tenuta il 24 aprile alla Sala da Tè Crystal di Filadelfia, Stati Uniti. Fra i dieci progetti premiati, uno in particolare ha ottenuto la Menzione Speciale, sei hanno guadagnato il Premio di Merito e tre hanno
ottenuto il Premio per l’Eccellenza. Il vincitore con il più alto punteggio assoluto, oltre a ricevere un Premio di Eccellenza per il proprio progetto, riceve il Premio Radiance della IALD per l’eccellenza nella progettazi- one dell’illuminazione. I vincitori di questo premio non conoscono in anticipo la popria situazione riguardo al ricevimento e meno del Premio Radiance, sapevano solo che dovevano essere presenti alla cerimonia serale di consegna dei premi. Il vincitore di quest’anno è stato Gerd Pfarré della Pfarré per la progettazione dell’illuminazione della Stazione Hafencity-Università della Metropolitana di Amburgo, Germania.

Diez ganadores galardonados, que representan proyectos de diseño de iluminación arquitectónica de nueve países- el grupo de proyectos más diverso
recientemente- componen a los ganadores del 30º Premio de Diseño de Iluminación Internacional de la Asociación Internacional de Diseñadores de Ilu- minación (IALD), reconocidos en una presentación llevada a cabo el 24 de Abril en el Crystal Tea Room en Filadelfia, Estados Unidos. De los 10 proyectos reconocidos, uno ganó Menciones Especiales, seis se quedaron con Premios al Mérito y tres con Premios a la Excelencia. El ganador con mayor puntaje de to- das las categorías, además de recibir un Premio a la Excelencia por su proyecto, recibió el Premio IALD Radiance por la Excelencia en el Diseño de Ilumi- nación. Los ganadores del Radiance Award no saben del estado de su galardón de antemano- únicamente que deben estar presentes en la ceremonia de premi- os de la tarde. Quien aceptó el Radiance Award por la Excelencia en el Diseño de Iluminación fue Gerd Pfarré de Pfarré Lighting Design por la Estación de Subterráneos de Hafencity-University en Hamburgo, Alemania.
