EXCELLENCE AWARD PROJECT: SILO 468, HELSINKI, FINLAND LIGHTING DESIGN: LIGHTING DESIGN COLLECTIVE With light as the sole transformative element, Silo 468 reinvents a functionally abandoned oil silo sitting near the sea, facing central Helsinki, into light art and a public space. Well-known to the inhab- itants of Helsinki, the area’s prevailing winds served as the muse for the design team from Lighting Design Collective. Using natural light, wind and the movement of light on water as visual inspiration, the walls of the silo are perforated with 2012 holes in honour of the World Design Capital year.
“The creativity in using both electric lighting and daylight to create a living, breathing space shows how light can transform an aban- doned industrial element into a well-used public attraction,” one IALD awards judge commented of the project.
EXCELLENCE AWARD
PROJECT: CROWN TOWERS EASTERN ENTRY, MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA LIGHTING DESIGN: ELECTROLIGHT
Crown Melbourne is an entertainment complex comprising a casino, luxury hotel, five-star restaurants, bars and retail offerings. The eastern end of this complex was extended, incorporating a new façade. The challenge was to light the façade while accentuating the richness of the faceted glass and sumptuous sandstone elements. “The lighting of the façade has created a cross between a sparkling jewel and bubbles in champagne,” one judge commented of the project. The design concept was that of a luxury perfume bottle with precious contents. The interesting effect realized over the entire sandstone and glass façade was achieved through concealing cold cathode light in the façade nosing. Light is reflected in each of the corrugations of the individual glass panels.
MERIT AWARD PROJECT: BURLINGTON ARCADE, LONDON, UK LIGHTING DESIGN: SPEIRS + MAJOR Burlington Arcade is a Grade II listed shopping mall dating back to 1819. The lighting brief aimed to raise the arcade’s profile as a tourist destination by sensitively restoring its appearance as well as providing infrastructure to support events.
“This project combines a successful concept, finely coordinated details and control settings that prove the designers’ mastery of lighting design,” one judge commented on the arcade. A bright and attractive space was created that reveals the site’s unique architecture while concealing the fittings and wiring as much as possible. The heavy demand on the power supply to the building meant the scheme had to be delivered within the total load of the previous metal halide scheme.

Prix, ont reconnu lors d’une présentation tenue à 24 Avril au Crystal Salon du Thé à Philadelphie, USA. Des les dix projets reconnus, une entrée a gagné la Citation Spéciale, six ont gagné Prix du Mérite et trois ont gagné Prix d’ Excellence. Le gagnant avec le plus haut point score à travers toutes les catégories, en plus pour recevoir un Prix d’Excel- lence pour leur projet, reçoit le Prix de la Radiance IALD pour Excellence en la Conception d’éclairage. Les gagnants du Prix de Radiance ne savent pas à l’avance de leur Radiance Prix-gagner status- seulement qu’ils doivent être présents à la céré- monie de remise de prix. Acceptant le Prix Radiance pour l’excellence en la conception d’éclairage était Gerd Pfarré du Pfarré Conception d’éclairage pour le Hafencity Université Métro Gare de Hambourg, en Allemagne.
